Job Description
Job Title: Sport Scientist
FLSA Status: Exempt
Department: Athletic and Personal Development (APD)
Position Summary: Support the delivery of sport science and data management best practices at IMG Academy
Position Responsibilities
Sport Science Delivery
  • Support the Director of Sport Science to build a sport science program at IMG Academy that delivers the company’s mission to help athletes realize their potential.
  • Keep up to date with ongoing research and world leading concepts in sport science.
  • Engage and collaborate with sport coaches and APD staff to drive continuous education and program improvement through sport science initiatives.
  • Conduct discrete and multi-disciplinary projects, make interventions and interpret data in relation to athlete development and communicate findings to athletes, coaches and other support staff.
  • Assist in designing training programs to maximize development for athletes training at IMG Academy.
  • Lead and deliver sport science services and projects as part of agreed team objectives.
  • Support and collaborate with the wider APD team to achieve comprehensive testing and longitudinal monitoring of student-athletes.
  • Educate and advise student-athletes and coaches on areas such as planning and periodization load monitoring, recovery techniques etc.
Data & Technology
  • Assist to drive and influence a data-informed community-of-practice to ultimately benefit the development and performance of all student-athletes at various stages of their developmental journey at IMG Academy.
  • Collaborate with sport coaches, APD staff, Student Life staff and teachers to drive continuous education and program improvement through data interpretation, information, insights, and knowledge management.
  • Assist to establish benchmark performance information to enable the monitoring and reporting of student-athlete development and performance.
  • Support the administration and technical implementation of the Smartabase AMS project at IMG Academy.
  • Assist with developing and deploying best practice solutions for the data requirements of a large and diverse Academy of 1400+ student-athletes across nine sports.
  • Work closely with stakeholder groups to explore domain specific data and information flow priorities to enable the design and build of data entry flows and display dashboards to suit various analysis and visualization needs.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to generate both high level scientific and applied reports depending on target audience.
  • Strong presentation skills required to communicate sport science information in a clear and concise manner to all stakeholders including student-athletes, parents, coaches and management.
  • Minimum of 2 years of applied sport science experience.
  • Undergraduate degree considered with extensive applied experience.
  • Knowledge of sports science and medicine disciplines and their impact on training and performance of youth student-athletes.
  • Experience in conducting scientifically underpinned assessment, monitoring and evaluation procedures.
  • Master’s degree or higher in sport science/kinesiology.
  • Excellent written and inter-personal communication skills.
  • Advanced spreadsheet skills to facilitate data management, analysis, and reporting.
  • Ability to work independently to plan, organize and capture on-court or on-field data using various performance data capture systems.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Embed the core values in the day to day fabric of APD and IMG
  • Applied experience with performance data capture systems, such as GPS/LPS tracking, Force plates, HR monitoring, Motion capture, Timing gates, etc.
  • Provide delivery and coverage if needed to support the team
  • A superior work ethic.

Preferred Skills
  • Applied experience in youth athlete development.
  • Experience working with large data sets with multiple system inputs.
  • Ability to perform high level analyses with statistical programs such as ‘R’ will be highly valued.
  • Knowledge of sport, technology and innovation.
  • Experience and certification working with the Smartabase Athlete Management System (AMS).
  • Ability to perform sport science research and apply that research.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Ability to handle outdoor temperatures for a reasonable period of time.
  • Ability to move around large campus including gym, turf, fields, etc.
  • Ability to lift, move, push and pull equipment or boxes in excess of 40 pounds.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to include nights, weekends and holidays.
