Job Description

CLOSING DATE: Continuously Open, Bi-weekly Reviews

POSITION: Short Notice Deckhand

SALARY: $18.32/hour

REPORTS TO: Ferry Boat Operator on Duty

LOCATION: Gifford Ferry, Inchelium, WA

Basic Functions: Fill in as Deck Hand to assist in the operation and maintenance of the Inchelium/Gifford Ferry. Position functions as a deck hand on the Columbian Princess.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Training:

  • Must pass the training for deck hands given by the deck hand on duty.
  • Must live in area or able to relocate to area.
  • The work schedule demands working weekends and holidays.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Washington State Driver’s License.
  • Agility is required for movement on the ferry when underway.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of traffic control hand signals.
  • Must be able to lift 75lbs. using the proper lifting techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid, lifesaving procedures and use of fire extinguishers.
  • Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions ranging from high heat to extremely cold temperatures.

Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.


TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.


If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
