Position Summary
The Senior Space Planner provides vital space planning and pre-design expertise to structure and manage the programming and physical planning of capital construction projects to meet University space needs. Reporting to the Executive Director of Facilities Planning, the Senior Space Planner will interface with academic and administrative stakeholders at all levels to develop programming and space planning scenarios for a broad range of capital and strategic planning initiatives ranging from new buildings to modest office renovations.
Responsibilities
The Senior Space Planner will be responsible for preparing, reviewing, and issuing programming and space planning deliverables in graphic and quantitative formats from a range of source materials including space surveys, end user interviews, program information, functional analyses, benchmarking and other sources of information.
He/ she is responsible for day-to-day client interaction, production and management of multiple planning studies.
The Senior Space Planner will be responsible for providing leadership and value-added input at all stages of capital project delivery when required and will work closely with Columbia Facilities personnel as well as consulting architects and engineers to facilitate the definition and delivery of capital construction projects in a timely manner and within established budget perimeters.
Specific tasks for this position will include data gathering, analysis and organization of information into reports and graphic formats; conducting client interviews, preparing functional space program documents, conceptual design alternatives and other deliverables for campus space planning initiatives.
He/ she will be responsible for leading planning project meetings and producing meeting minutes and other documentation as required. He/she will be required to have a working knowledge of New York City building and fire code regulations and building systems infrastructure as they relate to planning and pre-design studies.
The Senior Space Planner will also be responsible for contributing to and administering the development and implementation of graphic standards and deliverables, including software implementation to support planning efforts.
He/she will serve as the Executive Director’s representative in both internal CU Facilities and campus wide capacities, and will provide supervision of planning and architectural consultants workflow and priorities, and indirect supervision of internal planning staff and interns as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 4-6 years of related experience required. Advanced degree desirable.
A bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Planning, Interior Design, or related field and at least four years of
practical experience.
Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, including the ability to build trust and understanding
with clients.
The ability to partner closely with colleagues in a strong team environment and have a proactive
approach toward work products.
The ability to negotiate and balance the expectations and priorities of demanding constituencies while keeping the University's priorities in view.
Extensive computer experience in CAD software packages, database, spreadsheet, and word processing
software is required.
Strong oral and written communication skills as well as creativity, attention to detail, and analytical skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications
A master’s degree in Architecture or Planning is preferred.
Previous experience in a University or similar institutional environment, and experience with a broad range of project types including science lab planning, space programming, administrative space planning is preferred.
