Job Description
Our Mission
To restore cell health and resilience through cellular rejuvenation programming to reverse disease, injury, and the disabilities that can occur throughout life.
For more information, see our website at altoslabs.com.
Diversity at Altos
We believe that diverse perspectives are foundational to scientific innovation and inquiry.
We are building a company where exceptional scientists and industry leaders from around the world work side by side to advance a shared mission.
Our intentional focus is on Belonging, so that all employees know that they are valued for their unique perspectives.
At Altos, we are all accountable for sustaining a diverse and inclusive environment.
What You Will Contribute To Altos
An exciting opportunity is available for a talented Scientist or Senior Scientist to join the Bay Area Institute of Science at Altos Labs. The microbiota is emerging as a fundamental force influencing diverse aspects of physiology and disease conditions. One of the biggest challenges in microbiome research is the identification of the mechanism by which a given bacterial strain (or bacterial community) regulates physiology and age-related conditions. We are currently studying the signals, structures and mechanisms that regulate the gut-microbiome-interactions. We are using different approaches, including biochemistry, bacterial genetics, metagenomic, metabolomics, etc., to identify a) the molecular, b) genetic, and b) the gut-brain communication pathway by specific microbes regulate brain function (Buffington et al., Cell 2016, Sgritta et al., Neuron 2019, Buffington et al., Cell 2021). By leveraging our discoveries, we hope our work could lead to the development of new non-invasive microbiome-based approaches to reverse diseases associated with aging throughout the body.
What we offer:
  • A state-of-the-art and vibrant research institute located in the San Francisco Bay Area that will expose you to a team of world-class scientists with a broad range of expertise.
  • A novel hybrid approach to research combining the best of both the academic and industrial worlds (i.e. the freedom of academia and the resources of industry).
  • Access to cutting-edge infrastructure and technical support that will allow you to focus entirely on your project(s).
Major responsibilities include:
  • Think creatively and independently while designing and conducting experiments.
  • Communicate your findings to Altos Labs and other scientists as needed through high-quality publications and posters/presentations.
  • In collaboration with the PI, develop an ambitious project(s) centered on the hologenome (host + microbes) and its impact on health and disease.
Who You Are
The level of the position will depend on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience working in microbiology and/or microbiome-related fields.
  • Documented record of professional achievement in the form of impactful publications.
  • Microbiome/Virome: e.g., host-microbe interactions, human/animal samples, animal handling (behavior, interventions, dissections, etc.), germ-free & gnotobiotic mice, metagenomic sequencing analysis, comparative genomics.
  • Experience in any of a range of cutting-edge experimental approaches including high-throughput screening, CRISPR technology, genetic engineering, proteomics, metabolomics, chemical biology, synthetic biology, molecular biology, advanced imaging, gnotobiotics, animal behavior, and bioinformatics/artificial intelligence.
  • PhD in a relevant discipline.
  • Microbiology: e.g., aerobic and anaerobic microbial cultivation, viral/phage cultivation, isolation of species from complex communities, genetic engineering of microbes and viruses, microbial genomics, synthetic biology, metabolomics, chemistry, cell culture.
  • Excellent computer skills (coding experience with python and/or R considered a plus but not required) and proficiency with Google and Microsoft apps.
Salary range: Scientist I, 120,700 - 163,300; Scientist II, 142,000 - 211,950; Senior Scientist, 157,000 - 253,200
