Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory has nearly 8,000 employees working at primary locations in Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina, and Idaho. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory also has an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations around the globe. We are dedicated solely to the support of the United States Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.

Are you looking for a dynamic position that deepens your understanding of NNLs main product line? Shipyard Field Engineering has positions that provide a comprehensive understanding of the many technical disciplines (Mechanical/Fluids, Electrical/I&C, Reactor Physics/Protection Analysis, and Chemistry Control) that go into Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plants. The Reactor Plant Contractors' Office (RPCO) Program is seeking a Field Engineer at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, supporting NIMITZ Class maintenance availability testing work. RPCO engineers operate in a fast paced, dynamic environment and independently exercise authority to ensure that work is conducted in a safe manner. RPCO field engineers are on-site representatives for the Naval Nuclear Laboratory and BPMI. The selected candidate will provide engineering support and independent oversight of work associated with A4W maintenance, equipment modification and problem resolution, and testing. RPCO engineers provide a deckplate presence during performance of nuclear work and operations and are expected to utilize their technical breadth and depth to influence and provide feedback to on-site management and partner organizations. This position involves direct interaction with Navy personnel, shipyard engineering, site organizations, local government representatives, and partner organizations at NNL and BPMI. Successful completion of a NIMITZ Class (A4W) Joint Test Group qualification is required for this position. Training associated with this qualification is expected to take approximately 6-10 months, depending on previous experience, and will be conducted at the Bettis Laboratory Site. At the conclusion of the qualification, the prospective RPCO Field Engineer will be expected to demonstrate an adequate understanding of A4W integrated plant operations prior to relocating to the Puget Sound RPCO. Upon arrival at Puget Sound approximately 2-3 months of additional hands-on training will be required before becoming a fully qualified Joint Test Group engineer.

This is a valuable career growth opportunity. Upon completion of the A4W Joint Test Group qualification the candidate is expected to complete a 3-5 year assignment at Puget Sound prior to returning to the laboratory and applying those newly developed skillsets in a leadership capacity. While in the field there are also opportunities for travel to support other locations during peak workload periods.
