Job Description
Due to the nature of an Ambulatory Surgery Center, the Registered Nurse may be required to fulfill one or more roles. RNs must be flexible and have cross training to all areas of the Surgery Center. The preoperative RN provides planned and highly skilled nursing care for patients in the preoperative phase of their admission for surgery. The preoperative nurse continuously assesses and prepares the patient for surgery. Recognition of potential surgical complication due to an unstable preoperative phase can save the patient from potential dangerous complications of surgery. The Operating Room Nurse is a Registered Nurse who is knowledgeable in perioperative theory and practice that provides for and directs the nursing care of patients within the operating room.


The Post Anesthesia Care Unit Nurse is a Registered Nurse that is knowledgeable in post anesthesia nursing that provides for and directs the nursing care in the PACU


The duties of the Preoperative Nurse include but are not limited to


  • May be cross-trained to circulate, if needed based on staffing patterns, and if trained.
  • Demonstrates understanding of utilization of nursing personnel in relation to hours of operation, admission of patient, duration of stay, discharge criteria / planning policies, and staffing policies such as quantity requirements and performance levels of personnel available.
  • Understands relation of his / her role to efficient functioning of other personnel in their roles.
  • Prepares charts for the next surgical day and checks to make sure that the history and physical, labs and EKG if ordered are on the chart. If charts are incomplete the Pre-op RN will notify the physician’s surgical scheduler.
  • Maintaining skin integrity
  • Maintaining airway,use of oral airway and ambu-bag (ventilation or other measures as needed the event of respiratory distress)
  • Providing narcotic sedation as ordered
  • Documents according to established guidelines in charts, logs, forms, reports with particular emphasis on Code Blue forms, Preoperative Nursing Record, incident reports, transfer of the patient to hospital forms, crash cart checklist. Implements and co-signs MD orders specific to Preop and admission.
  • Appropriate measures to take in the event of a disaster situation (fire, earthquake, explosion)
  • Start IV, 12 lead EKG, place patient on monitoring devices, take a blood sugar, pregnancy test if needed, crash cart, defibrillator, oxygen equipment, suction equipment (including wall suction), gurneys, restraints and FAX machine.
  • Opens the facility in the AM unlocking medication cabinets, counting narcotics, and noting refrigerator temperatures in the log.
  • IV Therapy as needed
  • Assures that all preoperative phone calls are done with appropriate documentation.
  • Responds to crisis situations in a calm, professional manner according to the facility Policies & Procedures
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of Policy & Procedure Manuals (Preop / PACU, OR, Administrative, Personnel, Safety, OSHA, etc.)
  • Assures that all necessary paperwork has been signed and is on the patient’s chart (ie., consents, labs, EKG, physicians orders, History and Physical).
  • Transfer of the patient to the hospital.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform the following skills, but not limited to
  • Assists with preparation of the next days charts as needed / or requested.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of logs, form reports related to assigned work area.
  • Locates and Uses Policy & Procedure Manuals for the Preoperative area and other reference materials as needed.
  • Performs essential protocols which include, but are not limited to
  • Provides education and preoperative teaching as needed to assist in the postoperative phase.
  • Assures that the patient is never left unattended.
  • Provides assistance in helping the surgeon or anesthetist prepare the patient for surgery.
  • Preoperative management and assessment
  • Proper positioning to prevent injury
  • Restocks supplies in the bedside carts as appropriate.


The duties of the Operating Room Nurse include but are not limited to


  • Restocks and replaces supplies used.
  • Accompanies the patient to the recovery room and gives an oral report concerning the patient's condition and operative procedure.
  • Assures that acceptable standards of patient care are followed.
  • Provides necessary equipment and supplies to all members of the surgical team.
  • Implements nursing care in the intraoperative phase.
  • Provides for patient confidentiality and privacy.
  • Assists in recovery room.
  • Performs the preoperative checklist.
  • Utilization of the nursing process to establish and provide for patients needs in the perioperative setting.
  • Maintains sterile field, initiating corrective action when breaks in the technique occur.
  • Assists with clean up of room between procedures and the end of the schedule.
  • Implements the preoperative checklist.
  • Follows medical/legal policies governing the Surgery Center at all times.
  • Attends staff meetings and in-services.
  • Monitors the environment (i.e., temperature, noise level).
  • Assists in admitting.
  • Assures a safe environment (i.e., safety straps, electrosurgical grounding, maintenance of equipment).
  • Coordinates nursing interventions with the other members of the surgical team (i.e. Surgeon, Anesthesiologist and other personnel).
  • Performs circulating duties
  • Supervises and assists paraprofessionals in room.
  • Monitors the physiologic status of the patient during local cases.
  • Participates in preoperative interviews.
  • Provides for the psychological needs to the patient, acts as the patient advocate.
  • Shares and performs assigned duties necessary for the Surgery Center operations (i.e., ordering supplies, equipment checks).
  • Maintains and upgrades standards of performance and education.
  • Completes Intraoperative Nursing Record.
  • Performs and records sponge and needle counts.
  • Assists Surgeons and Anesthesiologists as necessary.
  • Observes and enforces cost containment practices with effective utilization of time and materials.


The duties of the PACU Nurse include but are not limited to


  • Assists in the OR, as needed, when qualified to do so.
  • Participates in preoperative interviews.
  • Assures a safe environment.
  • Performs initial assessment upon arrival in the PACU
  • Assists in admitting.
  • Able to initiate Incident Reports when needed and knows where to report Quality Assurance issues.
  • Assesses the patient's preoperative status and intraoperative course.
  • Assists with clean up of the PACU.
  • Utilizes the nursing process to establish and provides of patients needs in the post operative setting.
  • Reviews the post operative instructions with patient and family.
  • Restocks and replaces supplies used.
  • Plans and provides for the nursing care in the PACU.
  • Documents care on the post anesthesia record.
  • Observes and enforces cost containment practices with effective utilization of time and materials.
  • Provides for patient confidentiality and privacy.
  • Follows medical/legal policies governing the Surgery Center at all times.
  • Prepares the patients for discharge, and discharges patients upon order of the physician. Provides for efficient transfer of patients to a hospital when necessary.
  • Coordinates nursing interventions with the other members of the surgical team (i.e., Surgeon, Anesthesiologist an other personnel).
  • Reports to the PACU Charge RN and follows the appropriate chain of command to resolve issues.
  • Shares and performs assigned duties necessary for the Surgery Center operations (i.e., ordering supplies, equipment checks).
  • Maintains and upgrades standards of performance and education.
  • Attends staff meeting and in-services, participates in OSHA and safety programs.
  • Monitors the environment (i.e., temperature, noise level).
  • Administers drugs and solutions according to Surgery Center policy.


All RN’s must be licensed to practice nursing in the State of NV. Graduate from an accredited nursing program and have an ACLS/BCLS card. RN’s must have prior acute care experience or ambulatory surgical center experience. Preoperative RN’s must be IV certified or have passed the IV Competency and able to take a 12 lead EKG.

This position is primarily responsible for the work up, education and follow up of potential patients. This position will complete all necessary work up including obtaining medical and surgical history, and the completion of all diagnostic testing. This position is also responsible for assisting the doctor in the exam lane and in surgical procedures by performing the following duties.


  • Orders all medical supplies.
  • Keeps up with all regular and emergency maintenance on medical equipment.

  • 2+ years experience as Ophthalmology Technician is Ideal
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent Required
  • Evaluates and measures pupil size and responses, general use of a slit lamp microscope, applanation tonometer and proper instillation of eye drops.
  • Understands all equipment and instruments used in the center, including LASIK suite
  • Performs deft in auto refractions, topographical mapping, wavefront analysis, lensometer, pachymeter and visual acuities.
  • Assists in other areas as needed
  • Ensures that all forms are complete and pertinent information has been recorded.
  • Calls to request pre/post-ops on surgery patients.
  • Provides pre/post-operative care and instructions.
  • Stocks all medication and medical supplies by proactively planning work week to ensure completion of required tasks.
  • Assists in surgery by preparing the laser room with supplies and sterilized equipment.
