Position Summary:
The Risk Management Program is designed to protect the human and financial assets of the organization against the adverse effects of accidental losses, effectively managing the losses that may occur, and enhancing continuous improvement of patient care services in a safe healthcare environment.
The Risk Manager (RM) is responsible for the facility’s risk management activities, which include, but may not be limited to: a general knowledge of facility insurance programs; administering the risk management program on a day-to-day basis; managing and analyzing risk management data, trending, identifying gaps in results or program aspects, identifying opportunities for improvement, preparing reports to communicate data findings and analysis of information; conducting education applicable to risk management and patient safety initiatives; complying with regulatory and accreditation standards; formulating policy to support risk management initiatives and principles; participating in committees to integrate risk management into committee work product; interfacing with the corporate risk management department on claims management; and minimizing loss to protect the assets of the facility.
The RM is responsible for reviewing and formulating policy or organizational changes and making recommendations for final approval by senior management and the board.
Essential Job Duties:
Program Development, Implementation and Management:
1. Drafts the Risk Management Program with review and revision as indicated annually for the approval of the administration and the governing body. The plan will state the authority delegated by the board to the risk manager and will include program aspects, measures of effectiveness, and responsibilities.
2. Prepares an annual report to the board of directors that is inclusive of claim history, occurrence trends, trends from other data representing actual or potential risk issues, initiatives employed in the risk management program and effectiveness of those risk management strategies as well as recommendations for the upcoming risk management plan period.
3. Collaborates with administrators, medical staff leadership, committees and directors to identify potential loss exposures, plan risk management initiatives, monitor the effectiveness of the risk management program and integrate risk management into the operational level of the organization to reduce or prevent losses.
4. Reviews physician and allied health applications for medical staff membership and privileges, along with accompanying supporting documentation, and shares findings with appropriate committees.
5. Performs proactive analysis of patient safety and medical error processes.
6. Maintains awareness of legislative and regulatory activities related to healthcare risk management.
7. Complies with various codes, laws, rules and regulations concerning patient care, including those mandated by state and federal agencies, incident reporting. Includes investigation activities of federal, state and local enforcement authorities.
8. Conducts orientation for all new hires concerning their role in risk management, including occurrence reporting Policy & Procedure (P&P). Presents education to all staff at defined intervals, provides reports and communicates to stakeholders in the risk management program.
9. Integrates risk reduction initiatives recommended by payers, insurers and corporate risk management into the hospital risk management plan as appropriate and applicable to the organization.
10. Takes steps to assure that risks are minimized through follow-up and actions on all regulatory/insurance survey report recommendations/deficiencies.
11. Receives and investigates reports of product problems to determine the appropriate response. Assures a recall and alert system is in place in the organization that includes timely receipt of information, dissemination, investigation, action planning and implementation, follow-up and documentation.
