Job Description
Blade edge development is a critical part of sustaining a competitive advantage for Gillette grooming products. The R&D Blades FEI, Design & Development group is responsible for new blade concept development, process prototyping, material and product development to enable new and improved blade edge designs. Based on assigned projects, the work may span across multiple areas and phases of development including a focus on conceiving, inventing, and demonstrating novel blade edge designs; understanding fundamental mechanisms; integration of new blade edge designs within a shaving system; new material and process invention; prototyping at various scales; and analytical method development and testing.


The selected candidate will coordinate experiments and conduct testing with a variety of prototyping methods and instrumentation techniques to provide insights for fundamental research to prove new product concepts, assess new materials, and develop material and product specifications to deliver superior benefits in our consumer shaving products within major brands like Gillette and Venus. The candidate will work with state-of-the-art technologies and equipment within a multi-discipline R&D team while collaborating closely with other functions within teams (e.g. Blade Process Development, Consumer Research, Analytical/Measurement Science, Quality Assurance, and other Product Design groups).


Important Responsibilities


  • Planning, execution, and documentation of trial runs within R&D prototyping and pilot labs in collaboration with engineers
  • Product testing utilizing routine and developmental methods. May include visual and/or mechanical review of product to support establishing specifications and assessing new materials and processes.
  • Maintain lab area and equipment through regular calibration and maintenance per established requirements and standards. Maintain proper level of operating supplies and recommend replacement or upgrades to improve efficiency.
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving issues during trials and providing hands-on practical expertise to developing solutions for quality and processing issues.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records in lab documentation system. Document results summaries including process data, product testing results, and relevant material data in collaboration with engineers.

Product, material and process development, experimental techniques (design of experiments, etc.), Electronic Lab Notebook system, Quickbase application, blade process prototyping & instrumentation techniques, data analysis (Excel, JMP).


Qualifications


  • Teamwork and collaboration are important within R&D. Strong communication skills required to provide input on technical requirements and approach to testing with Engineers and to work across several lab areas.
  • 2-5 years experience in a lab environment
  • Passion to learn product, material, and process fundamentals, lab equipment operation, and how blade characteristics relate to performance. Ability to learn on the job in a dynamic environment.
  • Associate’s degree in a technology or Engineering field is preferred or a high school diploma with relevant work experience.
  • Experience in use of measurement equipment including standard and non-standard techniques is a plus (e.g. microscopes, force testing, SEM, FTIR, XPS, etc)
  • Ability to learn various technologies and provide detailed observations and hands-on testing to support problem solving with engineers.
  • Strong organization skills to coordinate multiple tasks & projects with right sense of urgency. Have a bias for action & take strong ownership in troubleshooting issues in a lab environment. Ability to work with ambiguity & adapt to changing priorities.
  • In an R&D environment, having a methodical, & disciplined approach to problem solving, executing testing, & communicating key findings is critical to providing accurate results from experiments. Attention to detail & ability to identify potential issues proactively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint. Experience with basic statistics is preferred. Experience in technical report writing and documentation of technical and operational procedures.
  • Strong mechanical skills related to equipment operation, maintenance & troubleshooting. Experience operating thin film coating process equipment a plus.

Just So You Know:Pay Range: $75,100 - $86,400
