Job Description

Required Qualifications
PhD in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a related discipline, with 1 or more years of research training
Strong communication skills, written and oral
Experience in organic crystal growth and characterization by X-ray diffraction
Experience in microfabrication, including photolithography and etching

Position Summary: Lead scientist responsible for managing and executing daily operations of an important, multi-year corporate research contract. Reports to the laboratory principal investigator (PI). Work involves designing experiments in collaboration with the PI to achieve the objectives, executing the experiments independently or in collaboration with others, purchasing and managing supplies required for the project, training graduate students who carry out aspects of the work, writing monthly reports detailing the results, presenting the results orally at monthly meetings with the corporate sponsor, interfacing directly with corporate scientists, writing scientific papers for publication, and building or overseeing the building of prototype devices.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Experimental design, execution, and analysis (60%)
  • Procure raw materials from suppliers
  • Design crystal growth procedures and apparatus to reach project objectives
  • Analyze crystal structure and physical properties
  • Create and characterize crystal-based devices
  • Maintain and improve experimental equipment
Project oversight and reporting to corporate sponsors (20%)
  • Meet the project objectives according to mutually agreed upon timeline with the PI
  • Draft monthly written progress reports and present progress reports orally each month
Preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication and intellectual property disclosures (10%)
  • With the PI and corporate sponsors provide information for the patent process
  • With the PI, draft scientific reports for peer-reviewed publication.
Training of graduate students (10%)
  • Train graduate students on various technical aspects of the work so that they can contribute to the project’s goals.
