MercyOne Central Iowa operates four not-for-profit Catholic medical centers in Des Moines West Des Moines Newton and Centerville and two specialty hospitals – MercyOne Children’s Hospital in Des Moines and MercyOne Rehabilitation Hospital in Clive (965 beds total) – along with more than 20 additional facilities that house more than 50 primary care pediatric internal medicine and specialty clinics. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1893 MercyOne Central Iowa has the longest continually operating hospital in Des Moines and is also one of the largest employers in the state with more than 7000 employees and a medical staff of more than 1000 physicians and allied health associates. MercyOne Central Iowa is a member of MercyOne which was founded in 1998 through a collaboration between CommonSpirit Health and Trinity Health – two of the country’s foremost not-for-profit Catholic health organizations. MercyOne has more than 20000 colleagues in Iowa and surrounding states.


Essential Functions


  • Support HR on communicating significant leadership and organizational changes and appointments.
  • Train marketing and communications teams and leaders on best practices for brand voice and culture communications in their work. Communications Management/Operations Duties (~40%)
  • Create accountability and optimize implementation of the communications strategy via leadership, mentoring and management of the communications team including the following direct reports manager internal communications, manager public relations, and 5 regional communications leads.
  • Develop, create, implement and track performance of all facets of internal and external communications, as well as continuous improvement and optimization of communications and communication’s impact.
  • Leverage your strong organization, writing and executive presence skills to support important key MercyOne strategies including, but not limited to integration into Trinity Health processes and systems, colleague engagement and retention, culture transformation, government advocacy and financial performance improvement.
  • Develop and Evolve MercyOne Communications Strategy Duties (~30%)
  • Collaborate with colleagues at all levels to understand the needs of the organization overall as well as the needs of location-based divisions and functional services.
  • Support the MercyOne CEO and Executive Leadership Team (ELT) with overall communications, including, but not limited to, PowerPoint presentations, meeting talking points and video script development to help them effectively communicate with colleagues and external stakeholders.
  • Support culture change, including sourcing and promoting stories which capture culture transformation and inspire MercyOne colleagues. Infuse culture language and brand voice into all communications and media.
  • Connect MercyOne colleagues to our mission, vision, values and their impact on our balanced score card results.
  • Ensure the implementation of the MercyOne brand style guide by partnering with all marketing and communications colleagues and implementing appropriate updates. Develop Leadership Communications and Statewide Communications Competencies (~30%)
  • Through a team of ten, support MercyOne location-based divisions and MercyOne-wide functions including the medical group, network affiliates, operations, advocacy, Mission, HR and brand teams.
  • Serve as PIO and accountable executive as appropriate.


Qualifications


  • Adeptness at working with, coaching and meeting the needs of senior management, as well as a willingness to provide counsel, listen and take direction.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism or a related field required.
  • Well-developed ability to engage with key stakeholders and craft clear, tailored and accurate communication.
  • Organizes facts, ideas and evidence logically and presents ideas clearly.
  • Demonstrated experience in development and successful implementation of communication strategies.
  • Capable of handling multiple projects on constricted timelines, as well as project management experience overseeing large change management initiatives, or experience with a start-up organization.
  • Organized leader with a love of timelines and project management.
  • This position is expected to travel to various Trinity Health sites as needed (10%)
  • 5-10 years demonstrated experience in the communications and public relations (health care, consulting and/or related experience preferred). Expertise in helping colleagues understand “what this means to me.”
  • Experienced in prioritization with demonstrated ability to react positively and quickly to sudden and unpredictable changes. Ability to operate with a sense of urgency with rapid response capabilities. - This position may operate in a hybrid (i.e., work from home /office) environment.
  • A reputation for discretion, integrity, judgment, responsiveness and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to coach and mentor others inside and outside the team, as well as provide constructive feedback effectively.
  • Ability to establish expectations, timelines and deliver results through a high level of collaboration. Need to be an influencer. - Highly effective written and verbal communication skills for communicating to various audiences.
  • Credible, adaptable and someone who demonstrates strong initiative and ownership of high-level projects.
  • A strong team player with the ability to build good relationships with key stakeholders.
