Job Description

Introduction

The Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI), a fiscally sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (RPA), is requesting proposals for recruiting coordinator consultants with particular expertise in the hiring process, preferably with international experience. This individual will support GDCI’s 2023 hiring process in a coordination role in close collaboration with GDCI program staff to support the hiring of up to 15 new team members in 2023.

Who We Are

Established in 2014, The Global Designing Cities Initiative was incubated as a program of the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), a New York-based, 501c3, non-profit organization. In 2022, GDCI made the exciting decision to operate as an independent initiative under the fiscal home of RPA, a nonprofit organization and international thought leader specializing in the support of high-impact global projects and strategic philanthropic initiatives. GDCI is a team of (25) designers, planners, and urban strategists committed to working in support of city practitioners to get projects on the ground. Our mission is to transform streets around the world. We inspire leaders, inform practitioners, and invite communities to imagine what’s possible when we design streets that put people first. Our work is informed by the strategies and international best practices captured in the widely-acclaimed and award-winning Global Street Design Guide.

With support from funders including Bloomberg Philanthropies, FIA Foundation, Bernard van Leer Foundation, and Fondation Botnar, GDCI has three primary program areas:

  1. Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) provides cities worldwide with a comprehensive package of activities proven to save lives, such as strengthening national legislation; enhancing data collection and surveillance; changing road user behavior; improving road infrastructure; and upgrading vehicle safety. We began our partnership with this initiative in 2016 and have since collaborated with 18 cities in nine countries to provide design guidance, implement road safety interventions and conduct capacity-building workshops, using the Global Street Design Guide as a blueprint for change.

  1. Streets for Kids program aims to inspire leaders, inform practitioners, and empower communities to make cities around the world better for children and their caregivers. We work with cities around the world to apply child-focused strategies found in the Designing Streets for Kids guide through streetscape transformations, workshops, and training. As a part of Streets for Kids, we also partner with the Bernard van Leer Foundation’s Urban 95 program, working with leaders, planners, designers, advocates and communities to support the healthy development of young children and the wellbeing of caregivers in cities.

  1. Bloomberg Initiative for Cycling Infrastructure (BICI) was launched on October 10, 2022. Led in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies, BICI will fund ambitious cycling infrastructure projects in 10 cities by providing grants of $400k USD to $1M USD. The winning cities will also receive world-class technical assistance provided by GDCI, using the global best practices found in our Global Streets Design Guide.

Challenges & Opportunities

GDCI had the opportunity to double in size in 2022, and we expect even more growth in 2023. This growth includes the inception of a brand new program, BICI, and the hiring of a brand new team. As this new program is rapidly taking off and our work in other programs is picking up, GDCI is in need of a recruitment coordinator to ensure the successful hire of up to 15 new positions in 2023. The majority of these positions will be international.

We are looking for a consultant with at least two years of experience in a similar role involving recruitment for technical positions, preferably internationally. The consultant will also have demonstrated experience contributing to an efficient hiring process while also providing an excellent candidate experience.

The scope of work will be as-needed and deliverable-based, dependent on the readiness of the hiring managers to start recruiting for a new position. The consultant is expected to support each position's full hiring process, from recruitment to onboarding.

It is preferred that the consultant be based in the U.S.

Sample Scope of Work/Deliverables

  • Develop an understanding of GDCI’s current hiring processes and programmatic candidate needs
  • Coordinate all internal and external scheduling and communications regarding process and candidate progress
  • Organize candidate materials and hiring resources

Time Availability

  • It is expected that the job responsibilities will require 10-15 hours of work per week, with enough availability to respond to candidate questions or interview schedule changes in a timely manner.
