The Opportunity

A Quality Assurance Engineer (QAE) is a tester who helps our organization provide high-quality, high-value solutions to our customers, both internal and external. QAEs are first and foremost software testers but may also handle test automation activities as needed.

This position, QAE-IV, is a mid- to senior-level position and is expected to have between five to nine years’ experience with appropriate skill levels for the grade. There is no college degree requirement. QAE-IV testers are expected to perform tasks independently. QAE-IV testers also regularly mentor other members of delivery teams.

QAEs work closely with product delivery teams to:

• Partner with developers on establishing appropriate mixes of unit, integration, functional, performance, and exploratory testing
• Define test scenarios, identify dependencies, illuminate complexities, and similar activities relating to scoping work
• Perform automated and exploratory testing as needed
• Envision how software systems can bring value to ConstructConnect’s customers
• Collaborate with the delivery team on how features will be decomposed into smaller, well-defined work items
• Brainstorm clarifying and specifying how new features will implement customer-focused solutions

Testers are detail-oriented and curious, and are able to be part of collaboration with many different roles including product owners, customers/end users, developers, and support staff. Testers are open to bringing clarity from ambiguity, and are willing to work in a changing environment which emphasizes constant learning and improvement. Testers are also part of a team which emphasizes accountability to themselves and each other.

Good candidates must have modern testing expertise appropriate to their grade. Modern testing skills for a QAE-IV would include:

• Practical experience writing effective test scripts or specifications using declarative grammar
• Hands-on experience with advanced testing concepts such as pairwise, mutation, etc.
• Practical experience using exploratory tools including Postman, browser DevTools, BugFinder, Fiddler, etc.
• Some experience with test automation tools such as RestSharp, WebDriver, TestComplete, Cypress.io, etc. is required. (Note that expertise in all these tools isn’t required, and other tools may be acceptable)

Good candidates will have grade-appropriate skills in general technology areas. QAE-IV candidates should understand

What You’ll Be Doing

• Mentoring other testers or delivery team members on aspects of software testing
• Collaborating with appropriate team members to discuss Non-Functional Requirements (NFRs) and their implementation for upcoming work
• Building out effective test case coverage which includes developer-level testing, functional or API testing, manual testing, and some form of performance testing
• Pairing with developers to specify various test cases, perhaps even performing pair programming to build working software
• Working with Product Owners to map user flows and clarify critical scenarios for those flows
• Working to analyze, troubleshoot, and collaborate to resolve system bugs, discrepancies, or interesting behaviors
• Communicating the state of testing activities to various stakeholders, and learning to adjust work as needed to meet their goals
• Performing testing activities via exploratory testing via Chrome DevTools, Postman, or other tools
• Learning more about testing through content such as Ministry of Testing, Pluralsight, and numerous books and online articles, or attending one of the regularly scheduled group training sessions
