Job Description

Mechanical Engineer

Because this position requires the ability to obtain a security clearance, US Citizenship is mandatory.

Engineering support for fabrication, processing, assembly, packaging, and testing of novel electronic devices in the Protective Technologies Team within the Electromagnetic Effects Branch

:

Engineering R&D support and services in hands-on processing and fabrication of electronics and packaging within a state-of-the-art Specialty Electronics Materials and Sensors Cleanroom (SEMASC) Research Facility, using lithography, electroplating, sputtering, physical vapor deposition or evaporation, plasma etching, dicing, laser etching, probing, and wire bonding. Work to also involve testing and characterization of devices in complementary laboratories using probe stations, oscilloscopes, high speed visual and infrared videography, and calorimetry; also work in reliability including accelerated aging and other similar studies. Will work alongside and collaborate with other electrical engineers, chemists, materials scientists, and experts in the fields of electronics, energy storage, and sensors.

Experience/Skills:

  • Material Fabrication and Preparation: Cleanroom Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) fabrication techniques such as Sputter Deposition, Electron-beam Evaporation, Lithography, Chemical Vapor Deposition, Reactive Ion Etching. Alternatively or in addition, sub-millimeter scale 3D printing or additive manufacturing techniques such as Stereolithography (SLA), Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), and/or Direct Ink Writing (DIW) experience is desirable.
  • Modeling and simulation of thermal effects and properties would be a plus.
  • Materials and Device Characterization such as Nanocalorimetry, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction and Phase Contrast Imaging, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Parallel Plate Rheology, Electrical Probe stations, and/or Particle Size Analysis.
  • Writing/Communication: Documentation of technical results in the form of technical presentations, informal project or status updates, and formally published papers
  • Embedded programming experience desired but not required, such as with Rasberry Pi, Arduino, or other related embedded microprocessor/microcontroller programming environment. Experience and/or knowledge of Field Programmable Gate Array software and programming environments would be a plus.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in electronics reliability and Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT) a plus.

Specific Tasks and Duties:

  • Process development working with both established and novel materials, and development of new geometries, structures, and processing for research in novel methods for unconventional electronics packaging.
  • Plan and execute new equipment installation including facilities development and vendor coordination
  • Manage material inventories to ensure that adequate stocks are on hand, and that that materials are safely stored, used, and disposed.
  • Coordinate experimental scheduling and execution of reliability tests with statistically relevant sample numbers under temperature, humidity, shock, and other environmental stresses.
  • Support a safe research environment by following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and rules, and developing and recommending new SOPs.

The selected candidate will be an employee of General Technical Services LLC (GTS).

US citizenship is mandatory (to obtain the required security clearance). There may be occasional travel. GTS offers company-funded educational support for job-related training. To accomplish its mission ARD utilizes several unique facilities, most notably the Zahl Physical Science Laboratory, a 349,000 square foot state-of-the-art electronics R&D facility. This building has a 15,000 square foot clean room, dry room, high energy laser facilities, bio-inspired sensor laboratories and other research & development infrastructure.
