ABOUT THE JOB
Deschutes County is accepting applications for two Public Health Specialists (one position is pending Budget Adoption and will be available on or after July 1, 2023) for the Healthy Schools program in Bend-La Pine Schools. One position will be based at Summit High and the one position is based at Caldera High.

A Healthy Schools Public Health Specialist (PHS) is embedded into an assigned high school as part of the school staff, serving as a school health coordinator. A PHS’s primary focus is to improve the conditions within a school setting to support health and wellness for all students. PHS’s focus on topics such as adolescent suicide ideation, vaping, bullying, social media risks, tobacco and alcohol use, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections as well as other emerging risks and infectious diseases that may keep students away or disconnected with school, which increases the likelihood of negative consequences in adulthood. This work will be done using prevention and health promotion strategies that address the whole school and community.
PHSs work directly with school administrators and staff, student leaders and groups, parents/guardians, and community partners (such as health care providers and community-based organizations) to address adolescent and family health needs.

Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a school health coordinator for your assigned high school and the other secondary schools in your geographic area.
Knowledge of or experience with:
- Population-level prevention and health promotion strategies and practices.
- K-12 education systems, values, and practices.
- Public health systems, values, and practices.
- Providing instruction, coaching, and technical assistance to groups or individuals.
- Assessing needs and identifying appropriate evidence-based solutions.
- Coordinating and collaborating across services or agencies.

$5,681.03 to $7,613.1 per month for a 172.67 hour work month. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. These are union-represented positions. One position is available immediately; one position is pending Budget Adoption, if approved the position will be available on or after July 1, 2023.

- Bachelor's degree in a public health or related field;
- OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.
- AND three (3) years of related experience;
- Certified Health Education Specialist or Certified Prevention Specialist.
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.
May require certification(s) or successful completion of additional training to perform the job requirements and duties at this level within assigned program(s).
Deschutes County will comply with the Oregon Health Authority, Public Health Division Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR 333-019-101) requiring COVID-19 vaccination for employees working in a healthcare setting. It is a requirement of this position that the incumbent provide proof of vaccination status or request and be approved for an exemption based on legitimate medical reasons or sincerely-held religious beliefs (for detailed information on exceptions, please review section (4), (A) and (B)) by October 18, 2021 or their date of hire, whichever is later. Deschutes County provides reasonable accommodation as required by applicable law, and those finalists seeking a reasonable accommodation from the vaccination requirement may submit a copy of the medical or religious exemption form as prescribed by the Oregon Health Authority in order to certify the reasons for requesting an exemption. There is no need to take action at this point. More information will be provided to candidates that progress to the final stage of the process.
