Job Description
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist Level 1 or Level 2, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Dynamic Imaging and Radiography Group (P-1) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is in search of excellent candidates for a Research Technologist position at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) Proton Radiography Facility (pRad). Proton Radiography is a multidisciplinary research field, and thus we are eager to consider outstanding candidates from a broad range of specialties, such as optical and electrical instrumentation, data acquisition, experimental diagnostics, experimental operations, and execution. We anticipate this position to focus on deployment of scientific imaging sensors, optics, and semiconductor radiation detectors as well as general experimental operations.
Flash Proton Radiography, invented at LANL, employs a high-energy proton beam to image the structure and behavior of materials. The special properties of accelerator-driven protons make them a unique probe to make quantitative images of dense objects and/or ultra-fast phenomena. Our team performs exciting basic research studying, for example, the performance of explosively-driven shocked materials, high explosives, and bio-imaging. We also perform applied experiments to study systems such as nuclear fuel rods and armor, and to characterize components under dynamic conditions without underground testing in support of our mission of nuclear stockpile stewardship. pRad is a user facility; our team members operate the facility for and collaborate with guest experimenters, identify, and implement improvements for our unique and ever-evolving facility, and perform entrepreneurial research in their former or newly acquired areas of expertise. For more information about pRad, see https://lansce.lanl.gov/facilities/pRad/index.php
LANL's Physics Division is the leader in experimental physics serving the national interest. We design, execute, and analyze experiments that challenge, improve, and validate our understanding of fundamental physics underpinning LANL's national security mission. P-1 in Physics Division is home to a diverse group of experimental physicists, engineers, technicians, and students engaged in a range of fundamental and applied research. Group members specialize in nuclear physics beyond the Standard Model, weapons physics, imaging, diagnostics development, radiography, the application of state-of-the-art techniques in particle and light detection and recording transient events. We support a diverse program that includes personnel of many nationalities and backgrounds, participation in experiments worldwide, sponsorship of workshops and conferences, unclassified and classified experiments, and data analysis and interpretation.
