Job Description
What You Will Do

The Engineering, Operations, and Physics (J-6) Group is in need of an Operator to support the The Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Facility. The DARHT Facility consists of two large x-ray machines that produce freeze-frame radiographs (high-powered x-ray images) of materials that implode at speeds greater than 10,000 miles an hour. Such radiographs help scientists ensure that weapons in the stockpile are safe and effective and that-if ever necessary-they will perform as designed.

J-6 is responsible for developing and maintaining operational readiness and efficiencies at DARHT. Included in operations is the maintenance and upkeep of facility components, support of capability and facility upgrades, and creation of engineering solutions to unique accelerator specific issues. An Operator can expect to work under close supervision in areas involving high consequences for safety; e.g., radioactive materials, accelerators, and high-energy devices.

Operator 1 ($46,300-$71,400)

The successful candidate:
  • Performs simple installations, maintenance, and repairs on basic equipment and systems under the direction of more experienced technicians;
  • Works under the direct supervision of senior technicians to follow prescribed procedures required in troubleshooting and repair of electrical, electronic and mechanical failures using standard diagnostic equipment, detailed drawings, diagrams, sketches, specifications, schematic's, and manuals, along with verbal and/or written instructions;
  • Adheres to the principles of Formality of Operations including Conduct of Operations, Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Engineering, and Conduct of Training;
  • Supports occasional overtime that may be required.
  • Ensures safe operations of the accelerator systems in accordance with approved policies and procedures;
  • Operates and assists in maintaining the accelerator and support equipment;
  • Obtains and maintains DARHT Accelerator Operator qualifications;

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills and word processors.
  • Ability to understand and identify work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and experience with lock-out/tag-out of hazardous energy.
  • Basic skill in the preparation and presentation of facility status.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to learn troubleshooting and repairing electric, electronic, and/or electro-mechanical components of operating systems.
  • Basic skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on facility equipment.

Education/Experience: Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and at least 1 year of experience.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with installation, testing, repair, and maintenance of equipment or systems
  • Lockout/Tagout Trained
  • DOE Q clearance
  • Basic knowledge and experience in a wide variety of facility maintenance activities including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, HVAC systems
  • Experience in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting systems and/or equipment
  • Experience using basic bench top equipment, test equipment, hand tools, and measuring devices to conduct testing in a development mode, and determines methods or actions to correct malfunctions or design problems
  • Military experience

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Ability to hear high-pitched sounds, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 htz), climbing stairs, climbing ladders, bending, lifting 30 pounds, and carrying 20 to 30 pounds. Standard physical requirements associated with field observation and oversight.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Where You Will Work

The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division conducts experiments to generate high-quality data necessary to maintain a safe and reliable nuclear stockpile and to support global security. The Division fields, diagnoses, and conducts subcritical experiments, hydrodynamic tests, and focused high-explosive experiments at local firing sites and at the Nevada National Security Site. J Division also operates the Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Facility, the nation's premier hydrodynamic testing resource. The Division continually works with the Nevada National Security Site, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, the Department of Energy, and other partners to enhance the capabilities necessary to certify and ensure the safe, secure, and reliable performance of nuclear weapons' components, materials, and systems.

Additional Details

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
