Job Description
Seasonal Full-time position. The position can last 4 to 6 months. The incumbent of this position will teach trainees technical skills of forestry fuel load reduction and vegetation management while assisting and creating career pathways for trainees. Project activities include hand-cutting small trees, piling, and removing or lopping scattered debris. Tasks could also include land preparation, reforestation through planting or direct seeding, and application of treatment to control insects, diseases, or competing vegetation. Due to the geographical location of the proposed work site, the crew may be deployed to stay overnight on-site for up to 5 consecutive work days. SCOPE OF WORK : This position is responsible for the supervision of corps members to foster and encourage the development of good work habits, including timeliness, punctuality, neatness, and ethics. The incumbent of this position will teach corp members technical skills that can be used in obtaining employment while ensuring projects are completed within timelines and meet industry standards. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Two to three years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience including previous supervisory experience; Two years of college, vocational or technical training is strongly preferred. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence; Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization. REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Possess of auto, California driver's license, and proof of auto insurance. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position reports to the Sr. Program Coordinator and or Department Director and is responsible to supervise, directing, and instructing corps members in all phases of the Corps daily operations. ACCOUNTABILITIES : Counsels, coaches, supervises, motivates, directs, and coordinates a crew of young adults in a rigorous work program. Maintains discipline by enforcing corps discipline procedures and adherence to program goals and mission. Creates positive crew morale and builds teamwork by working alongside corp members and setting the work pace. Works closely with SCC staff to ensure Corp members' goals are being met. Provides accurate documentation of crew member participation, attendance, and work hours. Follows project plans and schedules and supervises the crew's daily and weekly activities. Ensures the work done meets industry standards for quality and crew productivity to ensure quality work. Ensures safe work practices and proper use of tools and equipment. Looks over a proposed project to determine how and when the work will be performed, including prep work that must be completed before the project starts. Ensures safety at the assigned work site and the safety of all Corp members by enforcing CSET, CalTrans, and State Safety Standards. Schedules with supervisor and youth development staff all manpower required at their job location. Reviews projects and keeps supervisor updated on progress. Maintains site records of accidents, delays affecting schedule, and unforeseen conditions. Holds Safety meetings with onsite personnel and corp members. Participates in staff and corps member meetings. Performs other duties including but not limited to fulfillment of work schedules, adherence to attendance policies, and other applicable operating rules, policies and procedures. SKILLS & ABILITIES: Upholds company principles and practices to the highest degree and represents the agency in a professional manner. In-depth knowledge of and ability to teach trades skills to corp members. Knowledge of relevant policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective safe operations for the protection of people, data and property. Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Knowledge of materials, methods, and common hand and power tools, such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, and wrenches, to precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices used in the process of projects. Ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others, the understanding of the well-established principles, practices, policies and procedures. Ability to perform successfully under moderately stressful conditions, respond immediately to crisis situations, and to balance priorities within and between work sites. Must be able to work under pressure and can work with different types of personalities. Ability to work independently as well as with others.
