Position Summary
The Project Manager (PM) for Construction will provide project management leadership for construction projects throughout the American Museum of Natural History’s (AMNH) campus and related assets.
This role requires leadership in the areas of project planning, facilitation, and communication, with particular focus on defining scope, procuring services, contract administration, budgeting management, logistics and scheduling. PM, with key Museum collaborators, will support the overall coordination of program development and realization with external consultants, vendors, and internal partners to ensure that the key objectives of the assigned projects are met. The PM will lead and participate in meetings pertaining to project scope and objectives, engage with all relevant partners and contribute to the planning and execution of the project. The PM will work closely with Museum personnel during the design and construction phases to meet operational requirements.
Inherently collegial and service-oriented, the PM will have excellent project management skills, as well as organizational, interpersonal, design and operations experience. The PM will be adept at consensus-building to build a shared dedication and understanding among diverse shareholder groups of the paths for implementing strategy. This role requires a creative problem solver who is self-motivated and organized, exceedingly observant of and attuned to the culture and functions of the Museum. The role requires judgment and integrity.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Serves as a member of the project leadership team and participates in meetings, reporting, and other forums as needed.
  • Leads in project planning including the development of objectives, timelines, resources, procurement strategy, and communications
  • Assists in surfacing issues, frames alternatives trade-offs, engages collaborators, and cultivates momentum around planning and implementation of key initiatives
  • Leads, with supervision, project procurement, contracting, contract negotiations, budget tracking, budget analysis, project staffing, change in scope requests, and other project administration activities, and coordinates accordingly with colleagues
  • Documents and distributes meeting minutes and related project documentation, and ensures team member tasks are completed within agreed upon requirements
  • Responsible for project controls, including budgets, contract administration, and schedule
  • Monitors project achievements and critical requirements to identify potential jeopardy to project objectives, and supports tactics to resolve schedule issues.


The expected salary range for the Project Manager, Construction is $100,000 – 115,000 annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.
Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.


Required Qualifications
  • Familiarity with museum exhibition, collections, research, laboratory facilities preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel required.
  • Exceptional client service orientation.
  • Strong written and verbal interpersonal skills.
  • Experience leading projects, in a museum or cultural institution or similar complex setting.
  • Three + years of proven experience in project management.
  • Ability to take direction, channel that direction, and implement across departments within requirements, while also leading up as needed.
  • Ability to handle multiple, opposing priorities and deadlines.
  • Experience working as partner in a relationship-oriented environment, with ability to work with multiple collaborators across departments to accomplish assigned objectives.
  • Three + years of experience with construction.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, analytical, and solutions-focused; and must possess an impeccable attention to detail.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Project (or similar) preferred.
