The Director of Community-Engaged Scholarship cultivates and sustains partnerships with schools and departments at Duke University, directly supports engaged scholarship initiatives by faculty, students and staff, and coordinates programming and resources offered through Duke Civic Engagement (DCE). The DCE coordinates opportunities for the campus to serve with local organizations, provides learning opportunities and resources reflecting best practices, and fosters academic and community collaborations.
The emphasis for this role is engaging academic units, faculty, staff, students and partners involved community-engaged scholarship at Duke. This position focuses on integrating community engagement across academic units on campus, including planning, developing and overseeing a variety of initiatives that lead to more coordinated, sustained and equitable relationships between the campus and community. Additionally, this role will create learning opportunities to equip faculty, staff and academic units that serve and collaborate with communities.
This position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Civic Engagement, within the Duke Office of Durham and Community Affairs.
Programming and Evaluation 50%
- Develop and facilitate faculty development workshops and communities of practice on community-engaged scholarship
- Collaborate with Operations, Research and Advancement on all grant-making and evaluation efforts to align with DCA standards
- Consult and collaborate on scholarly endeavors with faculty and partners relating to community engagement, which could include contributing to planning, implementation, evaluation or dissemination of research
- Cultivate, support and evaluate strategic collaborations across academic units to support best practices in community engagement and partnerships
- Coordinate and evaluate the ongoing development of the Community-Engaged Scholarship Collaborative, an initiative aimed at preparing and developing engaged scholars to collaborate with community partners on shared research priorities
- Evaluate, develop, launch and coordinate advisory groups to advance community engagement
Resource Development 30%
- Support and coordinate a network of existing sources of learning and support for community engagement partnerships in research, teaching and co-curricular offerings
- Explore, develop and maintain essential resources, policies and strategies for best practices to ground academic and scholarly collaborations in community engagement work across campus
Administration 20%
- Prepare communication and promotional materials for engaged scholarship in collaboration with Director of Communications to ensure all efforts align with DCA standards
- Recruit, hire, train and supervise graduate student(s) supporting academic collaboration initiatives and possibly future full-time staff positions
- Actively participate in professional conferences and networks
- Collaborate with AVP on developing the engaged scholarship budget to catalyze and sustain engaged scholarship and other academic collaborations with community partners
Qualifications
Education and training: Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a master’s degree program, terminal degree preferred.
Experience: Minimum of five years of work experience related to administration and program management related to higher education and/or community engagement, work with faculty or academic collaborations, or other experience relevant to the duties of this position.
Skills: Demonstrated skills in community-based approaches, program administration and management, assessment and evaluation, academic and scholarly collaborations, and exceptional written and verbal communication.

Education
Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
Experience
Work requires the ability to plan and administer programs and direct OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE. program activities within a specific functional area, generally acquired through four years of related experience.
