Job Description
Duties To Include


The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center (HCCC) seeks a Program Coordinator for Cancer Center Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This position will work collaboratively with the HCCC Associate Director for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Associate Director for Administration to advance the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion across the HCCC research, education and clinical environments. This position plays a leadership role in the integration and expansion of a broader range of activities, including programs for underrepresented individuals, diversity and inclusion enhancement opportunities, grant writing and reporting to expand resource availability for these efforts.


Contribute to the diversity, equity and inclusion goals of the University and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center in creating and implementing DEI policies, procedures, programs and services that foster an excellent cancer focused educational, research or clinical experience, promoting student, staff and faculty engagement while supporting the unique and diverse needs of the student, staff and faculty.


Cancer Programs related to the National Cancer Institute & CCSG:


  • Perform analytical and operational review and provide recommendations to leadership on areas related to DEI programs and grant preparation.
  • Serve as a member of HCCC leadership team, attend networking with other NCI funded DEI programs.
  • Convene and facilitate the DEI Committee(s).
  • Track DEI metrics.
  • Manage relationships with program constituents, including faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders to expand DEI program activities and initiatives.
  • Partner with other research units/offices across campus for cohesive and cost-effective services.
  • Conduct an annual survey of HCCC membership inquiring about DEI related items.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage program strengths to grow DEI activities that align with the HCCC’s strategic goals.
  • Assist with P30 grant writing and identification of additional grant opportunities for DEI focus areas.
  • Manage related activities and services that support the DEI goals of the HCCC.
  • Provide advice and input to top level administrators, as appropriate, in relation to DEI projects, research, and activities.
  • Establish, integrate, and support DEI efforts and related programming for underrepresented students, staff, and faculty.


Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Activities


  • Represent the HCCC and the University of Iowa at STEM Diversity career fairs, such as SACNAS and ABRCMS:
  • Coordinate learning opportunities by promoting workshops, giving presentations and disseminating resources to engage mentors and search committee members in articulating the importance of faculty diversity, reducing unconscious bias and implement evidence-based strategies to advance DEI.
  • Advise recruitment practices for faculty, staff and students, embedding diversity, equity and inclusion in all talent acquisition practices.
  • Build upon existing campus and community resources to recruit and retain underrepresented students.
  • SACNAS - Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science
  • Engage and facilitate a DEI committee to provide implementation of program oversight and accountability.
  • Facilitate key stakeholder strategic listening sessions to solicit ideas and suggestions for improvement.
  • Map current diversity, equity and inclusion activities.
  • Partner with organizations on campus and throughout the medical center to create and sustain an inclusive and equitable campus environment.
  • Ensure that administrators, faculty and staff are effectively promoting, modeling and implementing diversity, equity and inclusion core values.
  • Convene action plan development leadership group and identify HCCC priorities, ensure programs are appropriately aligned and adequately resourced.
  • Promote access to webinars, resources for faculty, and opportunities to participate in online mentoring, networking and coaching.
  • Assess HCCC climate related to diversity, equity and inclusion with surveys of faculty, staff and students.
  • Provide leadership in promoting and advancing diversity and inclusion in educational programs within HCCC.

  • Write, submit, and/or assist with grant proposals to fund diversity efforts and underrepresented minority achievement.
  • Create outreach programs to underrepresented populations as defined by the NIH (https://diversity.nih.gov/about-us/population-underrepresented) to promote interest in CBIO and Biomedical Sciences as the University of Iowa.


General DEI Development


  • Assist with DEI grant writing and grant management.
  • Perform review of outcomes of the DEI program and other activities as directed by the Associate Director, DEI.
  • Engage others on campus to participate in the program.
  • Foster relationships with stakeholders to effectively reach potential audiences.
  • Partner with stakeholders to advertise the HCCC DEI program.

Required Qualifications


  • A Master’s degree in administration or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • One year of organization management experience
  • Experience in developing and implementing programs to strengthen diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Grant writing experience


Highly Desired Qualifications


  • Experience in DEI research, education, or faculty development
  • Experience in academic program development and implementation


Desirable Qualifications


  • Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and regulations
  • Experience managing multiple projects and implementing new program activities
