Job Description
Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

The Payments team is a core pillar of Square’s Commerce Platform, delivering a flexible platform which can be used by developers to extend the Square ecosystem. Square’s Payments team provides payment facilitation and money movement services for the Square ecosystem, enabling Square sellers to accept payments and engage in omnichannel commerce. The Payments team prioritizes systems which are reliable and high scale systems, cost efficient, and extensible - especially with an eye to support emerging markets and geographies.

We are looking for a product manager of our Payment APIs, the core APIs used to process all payments and refunds for the ecosystem of Square products and third-party developers. You will go deep to understand the needs of businesses of all sizes and ensure our platform is architected to help any seller run and grow their business. You will be responsible for driving initiatives from inception through execution, and will work with a team of engineers to create intuitive and extensible APIs for first and third-party developers. You will work with teams across Square to ensure we’re delivering a cost effective, compliant, and flexible platform which supports the full breadth of diverse payments used to move money across the globe.

You will report to the Head of Product for Payments and collaborate with a group of peer product managers, engineers, data scientists, designers, sales, marketing, compliance, counsel and other cross-functional team members to ensure that our platform can support products that amaze and delight sellers. You will lead the direction of your product by setting the strategy and partnering with the engineering manager of your sprint teams to drive execution.

Responsibilities

  • Guide the creation of reusable platform and product solutions that are delightful, scalable and remarkable
  • Lead product strategy, planning, scoping, and prioritization of projects to achieve all of our goals. You will outline entire roadmaps and project requirements, goals, and constraints
  • Represent the team with partners and senior company leaders to align resources and prioritization
  • Gather and use feedback and insights from sellers and developers across multiple markets to improve your product experience and business performance
  • Work with engineering, design and data science to foster team dynamics
  • Determine features, write product and technical specs, organize user studies, help write test plans, manage the backlog

Qualifications

You have:

  • An analytical and metrics driven work style that leverages data to make informed decisions
  • Passion for our purpose of economic employment and innovation on behalf of our sellers and developers
  • Desire to lead, the ability to drive product strategy and work well with senior engineers and designers
  • Deep understanding and empathy for our sellers and the developers who serve them
  • Strong track record of execution
  • Demonstrated success launching and scaling platform products with public APIs, SDKs, or toolkits and maintaining them across multiple versions
  • 5+ years of product management experience or equivalent
  • System thinking mindset, technical background and passion for new technology and great developer experiences
  • Natural curiosity, obsession with the details, desire to build the right thing
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills that shine when you’re talking with a customer or engaging a cross-functional audience
