Reporting to the Special and Digital Collections Librarian, the Processing Archivist is responsible for surveying, arranging, describing, and performing basic preservation activities for new and existing acquisitions for a wide variety of formats. She/He/They will provide integral support for defining the scope and focus of collections within Gottesman Libraries Special and Digital Collections and play an important role in the management and policy of the Special Collections.

Reporting to the Special and Digital Collections Librarian, the Processing Archivist is responsible for surveying, arranging, describing, and performing basic preservation activities for new and existing acquisitions for a wide variety of formats. She/He/They will provide integral support for defining the scope and focus of collections within Gottesman Libraries Special and Digital Collections and play an important role in the management and policy of the Special Collections.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- 40% Assist in the management of distinctive collections in the following ways:
o Implements and documents procedures for the processing, digitization, and preservation of archival materials.
o Notes duplicative or non-archival documentation that may be eligible for disposition.
o Creates finding aids using contemporary tools in accordance with current and best standards of practice.
o Collaborating with the Special and Digital Collections Librarian, accessions new collection materials. Faithfully and independently represents administrative, legal, and descriptive information about new materials.
- 25% Assist with the implementation of ongoing digital projects
o Quality Control of Bibliographic Records
o Enhancement of bibliographic records where appropriate
o Development of online finding aids
- 20% Provide archival reference services
o Onsite and remote assistance
o Fulfilling patron requests regarding Special Collections material
- 10% Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned in support of Special and Digital Collections.
o Digitization requests for material
o Inventory projects as needed
- 5% Participate in developing and implementing policies and standards for special and digital collections.
o Providing input on established procedures
o Copy-editing where necessary
- Substantial knowledge of research methodology and skills in providing research assistance.
- Skill in searching and maintaining online and other electronic retrieval systems.
- Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
- Skill in the use of computers with Windows or Mac-based operating environments.
- Applicants should be enrolled in, or a graduate of, an ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information science or equivalent, or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries or a combination of education and relevant experience.
- Ability to interpret and evaluate client informational needs and to determine appropriate alternative solutions.
- Ability to effectively communicate and foster a cooperative work environment.
- Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
- Ability to make evaluative judgments.
- Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
- Knowledge of library theory, concepts, methods, and techniques.
- Ability to develop and maintain fining aids using contemporary tools in accordance with national standards
- Knowledge of archival and preservation concepts, methodology, and Techniques.
- Knowledge of archival ethics and laws relating to archival management.
Salary Range:
$23.38 to $27.23
