Job Description

American International University – Kuwait City (Position requires relocation to Kuwait)

Reports to: Director of the Library


Job Purpose

Reporting to the Director of the Library, the Digital Archivist is responsible for the curation of the AIU archives and the research repository. This includes the establishment, maintenance, organization, description, and preservation of historical university documents using digitization standards. The Digital Archivist serves as the institutional records manager, refines, implements, and upholds archival policies and procedures regarding processing, documenting, classifying and long-term preservation of university documents.


Duties

  • Provides leadership in the development, implementation, promotion, and assessment of AIU digital archive and scholarship initiatives.
  • Facilitates the digitization of archival materials by identifying, organizing, processing, and ensuring access to historical collections.
  • Creates and maintains the research repository-related documentation and workflows.
  • Maintains current knowledge of standards used in the creation of digital archives collections including best practices.
  • Maintains and does quality checks for research repository-related metadata standards.
  • Conducts quality checks on research repository submissions from the AIU user community.
  • Identifies conservation concerns and performs basic preservation practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • The Digital Archivist will apply professional standards to the processing, arrangement, and preservation of records; oversee creation of finding aids and creation of MARC catalog data.
  • Surveys collections, develops and implements processing plans in consultation with the relevant stewards of institutional records.
  • Serves as an advisor for digital archive and projects across university
  • Recommends best practices regarding the development of both print and digital access to the records.
  • Stays abreast of emerging, innovative trends and technologies, standards, publishing models, and digital archive developments
  • Coordinates the work of interns or work-study students (when applicable).
  • Creates, designs, and manages digital collections using established archival standards.

Skills

  • Demonstrated history of flexibility, creativity, and a strong customer service commitment.
  • Must be well organized, and able to meet deadlines and multiple demands
  • Broad knowledge of current technological applications for archival management and access.
  • Experience and knowledge of current practices in digital scholarship
  • Experience with DSpace or other open access collection management systems preferred.
  • Aptitude for technology; willingness to learn new systems and integrate to enhance services.
  • Must be results-oriented, flexible, and have an ability to collaborate with colleagues.
  • Evidence of effective project planning and management across departments.
  • Knowledge of descriptive content standards and best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences.


Experience and Education

  • Advanced degree (Masters Preferred) from an accredited institution in Library and Information Studies, Archival Management, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of rights administration and management issues for digital scholarship and archival collections.
  • At least five years’ experience managing a digital archive or research repository in an academic environment.
  • Experience in creating and maintaining documentation of policy and procedures.
