Iowa State University’s Vice President for Research is seeking an Agricultural Assistant I to manage the operations and maintenance of the greenhouses located in the Molecular Biology Building.

This is a part-time position at 20 hours/week.

Summary

Performs agricultural duties in support of research and teaching for growth of plant materials. Work may include monitoring plants to prevent problems, provide pest control measures using environmentally friendly means, maintain plant growth spaces for optimum conditions and train new users in successful plant growth measures. This position may also supervise students on occasion.

Example of Duties

• Observes and monitors plants in a greenhouse or growth chamber setting.
• Provides support for plant growth by users in support of research and teaching (e.g. fertilizer preparation, space sanitization, beneficial insect distribution, equipment maintenance, plant growth problem resolution).

• Maintains and tracks inventory.
• May provide supervision and guidance to student employees, graduate students, or greenhouse workers.
• Maintains, repairs, monitors, and cleans facilities, equipment, and growth chambers.
• Collects and records data for process improvement.
• Purchases materials.
• Communicates with and advises users in plant growth best practices.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working around insects.

• Works under relatively close supervision and receives guidance on new work assignments
• Entry level position acquiring job skills and learning standard operating procedures and policies to complete tasks
• Works on assignments which are routine in nature requiring limited judgment
• May provide guidance to students
• Refers difficult or less routine issues to supervisor or higher-level staff for assistance
