Job Description
Public Defender office in New York City seeks a highly competent individual to assist the members within the forensic social work unit. The Paralegal for the Social Work Unit, also know as, Parasocial, will assist in all social work aspects of defense strategies.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Researching and identifying out of city and language specific programming for clients
  • Request relevant records, including CHS and hospital records
  • Writing mitigation notes with supervision
  • Sending clothing/books, etc. to incarcerated clients or bringing items to court
  • Conduct research related to mental health and substance abuse issues
  • Review and summarize medical records
  • Transport clients to programs when needed
  • Perform weekly wellness checks on incarcerated clients
  • Draft subpoenas
  • Correspond with clients or family members to obtain case related information
  • Obtain program compliance letters for court personnel
  • Correspond with mental health and substance abuse programs regarding client referrals
  • Other related responsibilities as needed


Qualifications:


  • Candidates should have excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • The ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds in a culturally-responsive manner is important as is the ability to work independently and collaboratively, both in-person and remotely.
  • Ideal candidates must possess the temperament to work on time sensitive and intense cases.


Requirements:


Bachelors Degree or experience in Social Work or a related field


Experience working in a criminal court setting a plus


Spanish speaking a plus
