Job Description

Pay,Benefits, & Work Schedule


Two full-time positions available with the Law Department, Collections Division located at 414 E. 12th St.
Salary Range: $24.77-$37.16/hour
Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Responsibilities

  • Generally prepares 10 to 40 new cases for lawsuit each month and 50 to 100 garnishments each month.
  • After the filing of the case or garnishment, tracks the cases' progress, sets up payment arrangements within the parameters set by the client, schedules turn-ons of water services after payment, tracks all payments, prepares dockets for court, prepares all legal documents for attorney review, conducts research and sends out legal notices.
  • Handles a combination of front-end and back-end aspects of the water collections case within the water collections unit.
  • Assists with trial preparation as necessary and handles walk-in and telephone customers.
  • Reviews and prepares all files for suit by preparing the calculations necessary.
  • Prepares all pre-suit paperwork and handles post-judgment collection work.
  • Serves as a direct contact in receiving new special assessment collections cases from the client, and will inventory, track and research these cases in support of the special assessment collections attorney.
  • Contacts the taxpayer through email, and/or phone calls, and/or walk ins.
  • Performs job duties, as assigned.
  • Prepares the petitions/affidavits, judgments, garnishments, satisfactions of judgment, payment plans/consent judgments, and other legal documents to facilitate the collection of the revenue associated with the special assessment.
  • Researches addresses to determine ownership of the parcel in order to attempt service of process of the lawsuit.
  • Registers judgments in the State of KS and prepares garnishments to be filed in the state of KS, for all underlying collection cases.

Qualifications


REQUIRES an accredited Associate's degree or certificate in paralegal studies (sometimes also called legal assistant or other similar terms); OR an accredited Bachelor's degree; OR high school graduation and 3 years of experience working in a law office performing administrative work.

Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.

Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
