PART-TIME NURSE PRACTITIONER
JOB DESCRIPTION
SCOPE OF WORK
The Nurse Practitioner is a part-time, non-exempt position that reports to the Manager of Health
Services at The LGBTQ Center Long Beach (The Center). The person in this role is responsible for
the oversight of patient consultations and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. Primary
responsibilities for this position are subject to develop as the clinic’s capacity expands.
The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of local community resources, outstanding
written and communication skills, experience working with diverse populations (particularly
LGBTQ+ individuals), and excellent interpersonal skills. The person in this role will be required to
attend continuing education, trainings, seminars, and other professional development
opportunities to stay up-to-date on relevant literature and maintain familiarity with
trends/changes in public health and prevention services.
I: FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
A: Administrative:
1. Participate in team/department, interdisciplinary and staff meetings.
2. Schedule treatment and follow-up appointments with patients using the Center’s case
management system
3. Update client files with required documentation and case notes.
4. Answer and facilitate calls regarding questions, concerns, scheduling, and referrals.
5. Participate in performance improvement and quality improvement activities.
6. Support the Manager of Health Services with the review of patient files and
documentation.
B: Program Specific:
1. Prescribe medication dosage, routes, and frequencies based on patients’
characteristics (such as age and gender) and medical history.
2. Order, perform, or interpret the results of diagnostics test as complete blood counts
(CBC’s).
3. Analyze and interpret patients’ histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic
information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
4. Develop treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standard of care, and
professional practice guidelines.
5. Diagnose and treat acute health problems such as illnesses, infections, and injuries.
6. Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized.
7. Counsel patients about drug regiments, possible side effects or interactions with other
substances such as food supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, and
herbal remedies.
8. Recommend interventions to modify behavior(s) associated with health risks.
9. Detect and respond to adverse drug interactions, with attention to vulnerable
populations such as women, and older adults.
10. Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring
instructions to patients’ individual circumstances.
C: Direct Service:
1. Maintain strict patient confidentiality at all times.
2. Diagnose and treat acute and episodic illnesses.
3. Implement procedures and processes to ensure patient retention & treatment rates.
4. Collect throat, rectal, and/or endocervical samples for patients with limited mobility.
5. Assist team in the preparation of urine samples and prepare for lab pick-up.
6. Collect blood samples via venipuncture for syphilis and additional samples as needed.
7. As needed, order medications and supplies for administering treatment.
8. Ensure the exam room is properly stocked with necessary equipment and supplies.
9. Maintain complete and detailed records of patients’ health care plans and prognoses.
• At least three (3) years of experience as a practicing Nurse Practitioner.
- Current Nurse Practitioner License or Furnishing Number/License.
- Ability to pass FBI background check.
- Master’s degree in nursing or science of nursing.
• The compensation range for this position is $45 - $65 per hour depending on experience
