The Nurse Manager leads a team of care providers in an assigned area(s) cultivating collaboration, enthusiasm, and mutual respect while providing patient care and supportive services directed towards achievement of positive patient care outcomes, maximizing the patient's involvement in his/her own plan of care, improving service levels, reducing the length of hospitalization, and decreasing costs. Under the manager's leadership patients and their families experience the benefits of patient focused care through the integrated skills of all care team members. The Nurse Manager has 24 hour responsibility for overall planning, organization, direction and evaluation of patient care operations for a designated area(s) and is key in operationalizing the health system's mission, values and goals to create an environment that supports the nursing professional practice model. The Nurse Manager is responsible for managing, guiding, coaching and evaluating the work performance of patient care staff in their designated area(s), ensuring ongoing collaboration with other departments/areas that relate directly or indirectly to patient care operations. The Nurse Manager is responsible for decision making within the scope of the unit needs, this may be independently or often in collaboration with the division director or physician lead(s). The Nurse Manager has occasional direct patient care and access to confidential employee and organizational information. This position functions under the direct supervision of the Director of the assigned division.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Responsible for strategic planning, developing short, mid and long-term goals, facilitating goal achievement and evaluation of goal achievement consistent with the mission and values of the Health System; Works with physician leads, staff and patients to identify opportunities for improvement in patient care and processes. Demonstrates accountability for achieving targeted thresholds identified on Nursing Dashboards. Demonstrated informatics competency, including the ability to aggregate data, make decisions based on data and compile in to appropriate reports.
• Responsible for maintaining required staffing for unit operations and safety in accordance with specific licensure requirements under the Ohio Administrative Code including required staffing ratios, availability of qualified and clinically competent personnel, and provision of a multi-disciplinary treatment team.
• In collaboration with physician leads makes recommendations regarding changes to nursing services; confers with physicians and staff to review and revise policies and procedures; develops and implements policies, procedures, and program objectives; maintains and writes updates to the department policy and procedures in accordance with best practice and licensure regulations, as required by hospital governing bodies.
• Proactively communicates and networks with staff, other health system departments and employees, and the community. Actively participates in/assumes leadership role in committees, task forces and special projects. Assists with mentoring staff regarding special assignments and new learning opportunities.
• Promotes professional development of staff to assure competency. This includes incorporation of evidence based standard of care approaches and assuring completion of all mandatory education, health, and licensure requirements in accordance with licensure regulations.
• Participates in departmental and team meetings related to coordination of patient care on various shifts and days. Attends or assumes leadership roles in various hospital committee meetings in order to keep abreast of current issues, trends, and procedures, as well informs and educates staff. Maintains reporting requirements as required per various divisions.
• Participates in and supervises staff in daily patient care activities including planning for after care and appropriate placement if applicable. Assigns and reviews the work of regular nursing staff as well as orientees, plans and adjusts the work schedule of all nursing staff within the unit. Maintains appropriate unit coverage in accordance with skill mix of staff and acuity of patients. Assists in cross-coverage of other nursing unit if/when necessary. May function as the clinical point person for the hospital on a rotating basis.
• Participates in chart review, appropriately educating staff of documentation in accordance with patient treatment plan. Works with Utilization Review to ensure compliance with program regulations and identifies and monitors quality assurance measures, including implementation of quality improvement activities.

Supervisory Responsibility

• Has direct supervisory responsibility as outlined in Management Essential functions applicable to all Management Levels.

Minimum/Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• Leadership experience
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Management experience
• Registered Nurse with current Ohio License
• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Related work experience
