Job Description
Overview:
The Network Services Unified Communications Technician II is a crucial member of the UC Field services team responsible for providing reliable and efficient phone services to the University community. This role plays an integral part in Unified Communications infrastructure deployments and VoIP/Analog phone services maintenance across campus. Additionally, the technician will provide support for University Distributed Antenna System (DAS) deployments and maintenance, while working in close collaboration with vendors.

The technician works closely with members of Network Services Field Technicians as well as Tier 2 & 3 UC engineering teams to install, configure, maintain and troubleshoot phone service related issues, ensuring efficient and high-quality phone service. Additionally, technician ensures that areas with poor signal strength have the necessary DAS services available to support user community phone services.

The UC Technician serves as a knowledgeable expert on fiber, Cat5, Cat6, and coax media, responsible for installing and maintaining the necessary cable infrastructure to support phone services and Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS). This individual will be a key contributor to the planning, designing, and implementation of phone services under the guidance of the UC Engineers, including the repair and maintenance (RMA) of any UC hardware failures.
Responsibilities:
  • Create cut sheets for upgrades.
  • Receive required inventory and deploy configuration on newly implemented equipment
  • Identify, classify, inventory, and coordinate materials and tools disbursement used by technicians for telecommunication & DAS projects including maintenance, or repairs.
  • Prepare patch cables and labels.
  • Confirm proper services and functions are operational.
  • Assist with building project schedules.
  • Log/document command outputs and share results with senior level tier 2 engineers.
  • If needed the technician should be able to perform configuration tasks on the phones by logging on to phone settings options.
  • Identify, test, and replace faulty DAS systems.
  • Perform initial troubleshooting through issuing basic software commands.
  • Qualify incoming work orders for campus UC field services.
  • Under specific circumstances, perform complete RMA, update the firmware to a standard approved version on the new device, restore configuration on the new device, run testing and validation steps independently, and make sure the newly deployed phone is added to Call Manager.
  • Prepare and install replacements for faulty hardware, such as Cisco VOIP phones, analog phones, and emergency elevator phones
  • Proactively participate in professional development opportunities to continuously enhance technical skills.
  • Test equipment in the lab before production implementation.
Qualifications:
Essential Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience installing, configuring, and supporting mid- to large-scale UC and DAS infrastructures
  • Ability to lift 50 to 75 pounds
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Understanding of DHCP, TFTP & IPv4 Addressing
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficient in Radio and Cellular DAS systems
  • Familiarity with and ability to identify various telecommunication and network materials and tools
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to comprehend instructions and write correspondence
  • Highly skilled in configuring Cisco VoIP phones 88xx and 8861 platforms
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of layer 2 and layer 3 protocols as well as QoS for high-quality voice service
  • Valid driver’s license
  • In-depth understanding of Aruba and Cisco platform, routers, and switches
  • Commitment to providing professional, courteous customer service

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Understanding of network monitoring protocols and tools
  • Understanding of layer 3 routing protocols, IGPs, and BGP
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment
  • Basic understanding of ServiceNow.
  • Understanding of Commscope Electronics.
  • Network plus, CCNA, trained
  • Understanding of RF to Digital signals.
