Purpose Statement: The SEL/Behavior Specialist conducts and plans a variety of systems alignment and professional development opportunities for BPS based on assessed needs. Provides on-site team support, consultation, observation, coaching, and professional development for district, schools, and teams. Assists with development, implementation, and evaluation of BPS initiatives (including MTSS, PBIS, ISF, SEL,SBMH). Researches and providers guidance around upcoming mental health initiatives and collaborations. Evaluate current data systems and provide recommendations for enhancing the data collection process within BPS.
Experience Required: Implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS); Working with multidisciplinary teams, Providing trainings related to MTSS (including SEL and PBIS), knowledge of mental health and community resources within Bismarck; Understanding of a school system and educational best practices; Experience with guiding teams through data based decision making.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Facilitate MTSS school based teams and districtwide committees for supports through a Student Services model (including Administration, Counselors, Social Workers, Classroom and Specialists Teachers, Instructional Coaches, and School Psychologists).
- Demonstrates the ability to manage time, work independently, and be self-motivated.
- Engage and educate the community providers in the ISF process.
- Assist the Director of Student Services in program evaluation, improvement, planning and development.
- Instructs district and site staff on the use of data in analysis (e.g. using data analysis in decision making, etc.) for the purpose of providing end-user training regarding the effective and efficient use of database tools and resources.
- Provide training to whole school staff, teams, and department.
- Create a system to collect school systems assessment data and document the continuum of evidence based practices along with fidelity and outcomes to interventions at each school. Coordinate the external walk-through audit for each school building.
- Demonstrates knowledge of laws related to restraint and seclusion and supports procedures and policies in alignment with such laws.
- Prepares and submit reports in a timely manner.
- Facilitate team assessment of systems, guide action planning, and coordinate training for teams and/or schools.
- Assists staff in the implementation of academic, functional and social instruction necessary to students’ individual goals/objectives and/or program goals. Examples but not limited to: (Facilitate Tier II Systems training (e.g. SAIG, CI/CO), Coaching Classroom Management Training, Why Try, Second Step, Anti-Bullying curriculum and strategies, and infuse SEL components with content standards)
- Assists staff with data management, behavioral programming, and classroom management in alignment with program expectations. (Elementary Effective Student Behavior Handbook - Major/Minor, Bus Document, Assist and Set-up Tier I, II, & III Interventions, Review Restraint and Seclusion Data, and Review Incident Reporting)
- Educate all staff (support, professional, teachers, and administrators) on Interconnected Systems Framework.
- Continuous development, assessment, and training of the Continuum of Evidence Based Practices for use at all schools.
- Assists staff in establishing a positive and varied instructional/learning environment for students that reinforces appropriate student behavior.
- Develop supporting documents, tools, forms, reports, dashboards, and assessments to assist in the implementation of the ISF .
- Organize, Plan, and Facilitate Professional Learning Communities.
- Trains or identifies appropriate resources for staff within BPS divisions.
- Provide leadership, professional development and on-going support and training for staff on research based practices based on individual school action plans and department competencies.
- Performs related duties, as assigned.
- Demonstrates initiative, problem-solving skills, flexibility, organizational skills, patience, creativity, and the ability to facilitate change.
- Develop, Implement, and Align an Interconnected Systems Framework (ISF) structure for district-wide roll-out and implementation.
- Maintains a positive and collaborative working relationship with other administrators, other departments, and communicates essential n in a timely manner.
- Participates in professional development activities in order to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Leading portfolio assignments.
- Provide information for the BPS School Board: OE-10, R-3, R-4 and other requested items.
- Communicating with local and state stakeholders.
Education: Bachelors Degree and training/experience in the area(s) of; K-12 Teaching, Social Worker, Counselor, School Psychologist and/or related area
