Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor Science degree in Microbiology or Biology with some coursework in Chemistry. Two years experience in water resource planning, water management, lab experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess Water/Wastewater Laboratory Analyst Certificate issued by the State of Georgia (to be obtained within one (1) year of employment).
Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

Purpose of Classification:
The purpose of this classification is to perform process duties related to testing water and wastewater samples in a laboratory setting, including collecting water samples, performing microscopic evaluations, and conducting a variety of microbiological analyses.
Essential Functions:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Collects water samples and performs microbiologic tests to identify bacteria and determine bacteria levels. Recommends measures to remedy unsafe levels of bacteria and microorganisms present in water.
Performs microscopic evaluation of sludge samples to determine condition of microorganisms and evaluates the presence of desirable and undesirable microorganisms.
Performs quality control testing of equipment and recalibrates equipment as required.
Compiles information and prepares statistical and narrative reports on analyses.
Responds to calls from other County staff and the general public regarding issues and concerns related to water cleanliness, water sampling techniques, and test results.
Conducts toxicity testing to determine toxic concentrate strengths of effluents received by rivers, lakes, and streams.
Designs charts and graphs to show microscopic evaluation results.

Mathematical aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations involving basic algebraic principles and formulas, and basic geometric principles and calculations.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
