Purpose of the Job/Essential Functions:


The Merchandising Director is responsible for the strategy, planning and ongoing management of all retail, merchandising and e-commerce activities that supports the Austin PBS brand with a specific concentration on the legendary Austin City Limits music television series. You’ll be responsible for building our strategic approach and merchandising capabilities to influence buying and planning decisions to ensure our customers are offered the best product assortment. Merchandise our retail items across digital platforms, as well as own and man the on-site merch booths for both internal and external events. Reports to the Chief Marketing Officer.


This position will be an employee of Austin City Limits, a subsidiary of Austin PBS.


Duties And Responsibilities


  • Performs other duties as required and/or assigned.
  • Transport new orders of merchandise from the Austin PBS office to the venue/event and add to existing inventory.
  • Collaborate with internal teams on merchandise creation, monitor stock movement and consider markdowns, promotions, price changes, etc.
  • Own partnership with buyers, suppliers, distributors and analysts to negotiate prices, quantities and time-scales.
  • Own the coveted Austin City Limits television show commemorative poster program.
  • Work in a fast-paced, often loud, but exciting environment.
  • Control local licensing partner relationships, including trademark and branding agreements.
  • Work and manage the on-site merchandise inventory and sales for both Austin PBS events and Austin City Limits television show tapings at ACL Live at the Moody Theater.
  • Forecast and analyze profits/sales and plan budgets, informing leadership on evolving strategies and implementing real-time data improvements with stock.
  • Plan and develop merchandising strategies that balance customers’ expectations and company’s objectives, including tapping into partnership and influencers.
  • Train and supervise two to five volunteer sellers to provide prompt and thorough customer service.
  • Ensure all signed posters are initiated, tracked, distributed, and handled appropriately.
  • Ensure all products are stored properly and restocked accordingly.
  • Own all Austin City Limits and Austin PBS retail merchandising, including e-commerce activities.
  • Collaborating with artists/bands and flat stock designers/printers to create a limited-edition screen print or letterpress poster for each ACL taping.

Minimum Qualifications


  • 7+ years of experience in merchandising, buying, or product development, with a strong e-commerce background
  • Knowledge of Austin PBS programs and Austin City Limits brand and prior relatable experience is a plus.
  • Availability to work events during the day but also including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and be able to lift boxes weighing up to 30 pounds using proper lifting techniques.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Basic graphic design skills and/or familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and understanding of flat stock print techniques, including screen printing and letterpress a plus.
  • Music industry experience preferred, including experience communicating directly with artists and artist management.
  • May need to transport merchandise in personal vehicle and able to use company vehicle
  • Shopify, Amazon Seller Central, eBay, Square, and/or ShipHero experience required.
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, and exciting environment.


This is a full-time salaried position that is currently hybrid. Annual salary of $90,000 + commensurate with experience.
