This is a generalist position where the employee performs numerous routine and standardized tests in the areas of chemistry, urinalysis, serology, microbiology and hematology. Established quality control and instrument maintenance is part of the daily duties of the lab tech. This position provides a larger testing force to expedite turnaround time of test procedures and to manage an increased volume of testing performed by the laboratory.
- Examine laboratory specimens for specimen integrity
- Enter patient demographics and order lab tests in the laboratory information system
- Perform and document established quality control for each section of the laboratory
- Perform routine maintenance and calibration on hematology, urinalysis, hemoglobin and glucose analyzers
- Perform laboratory tests, such as: urine cultures, urinalysis, wet preps, gram stains, KOH preps, serum and urine pregnancy test, gonorrhoea cultures etc.
- Process and ship all labs outsourced to the State Lab
- Assist with phlebotomy as needed
Employee is subject to be called upon anytime to help the agency respond to a public health emergency which may include, but is not limited to, outbreak investigations, staffing mass dispensing or immunization clinics, providing disaster relief, or other incidents (man-made or natural and intentional or non-intentional) as they arise, or any public health response requested by the Health Director.
Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution
or
Associate's degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of medical laboratory experience
or
completion of a certified Laboratory Assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course and two years of medical laboratory experience;
or
high school or General Educational Development diploma and four years of applicable medical laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Management Preference: Minimum of one year of generalist experience in a laboratory setting. National registry certification, as well as ASCP, AMT or HEWA certified or eligible for certification. One year of phlebotomy experience preferred and previous experience in processing and handling laboratory specimens.

- General knowledge of the basic pathophysiological processes being monitored and how the medical laboratory science is applied.
- Ability to make accurate observations and written reports of test results.
- Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and in the performance of procedures.
- General theoretical knowledge of the variety of laboratory procedures applicable to the area(s) of work.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to instruct medical technology students and other health professionals in laboratory procedures and instrumentation.
- General knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and terminology.
Must have or obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Background check and negative drug test are required.
