Responsibilities
The Medical Interpreter (Spanish language) provides oral interpreting services for non-English speaking and limited English-speaking patients. Responsible for interpreting for any non-English speaking and limited-English speaking patient and their families within UCDHS using telephone, video, Vocera, and in-person. IIndependently and professionally work with non-English speaking and limited-English speaking patients, families and all health care providers within UC Davis Health.
Enhances the communication process between all parties by providing cultural information and guidance regarding the communication needs involved in the interaction. Follows CHIA and NCIHC ethical standards for healthcare interpreters.
Required Qualifications
  • Meet minimum California auto insurance requirements
  • Ability to read schedules, forms, brochures and computer printed information required to determine location of physicians, families, facilities and to disseminate this information as required
  • Ability to interact with and relate to non-English speaking persons of any background and culture with enthusiasm, professionalism and empathy
  • Tact and diplomacy to effectively meet the communication needs of the general public, medical staff, community, governmental agencies and internal committees
  • Ability to orally interpret information from the target language into English, and from English into the target language
  • Organizational skills to determine patient and workload priorities to enable completion of appointments and projects in a timely manner
  • Experience interact with various departments one on one, through the phone, via video, and in writing
  • Valid California Driver’s License
  • Skills to perform work accurately, completely, and clearly with the greatest possible fidelity to the spirit and letter of the original communication
  • Experience with medical terminology and familiarity with the Health System setting
  • Ability to write and print legibly to accomplish the documentation and administration tasks assigned to the job
Special Requirements
Ability to safely lift 25 pounds and assist in moving patients, and to stand on feet over extended periods.
Requirement to work overtime as defined by the collective bargaining agreements, float to other areas and work weekends and holidays.
This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
