The Health Services Agency (HSA) is looking for a qualified individual, under the direction of licensed staff and/or provider, who is responsible for direct patient care activities and related non-professional services necessary for caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients.

THE POSITION
Under the direction of a licensed staff and/or provider, provides direct patient care and related non-professional services, such as processing referrals, providing patient follow up, and procuring prior authorizations, necessary for caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients. The Medical Assistant reports to the Clinic Manager or designated staff. Incumbents are assigned to one or more County outpatient clinics. This position is subject to overtime, standby, and callback assignments. Performs related duties as assigned.

ABOUT THE TRAINEE DESIGNATION
Medical Assistant Trainees learn to perform the tasks of a Medical Assistant. This provides an opportunity to gain the experience needed to be considered for a Medical Assistant Promotion.
  • Trainee appointments are not to last longer than one year. However, appointments are extendible to a maximum of two years in cases where minimum qualifications are involved; and
  • Trainees are part of the unclassified service of the County;
  • All trainees will be appointed to the first step of the salary range for the appropriate position, and will be compensated 15% below the range established for the Medical Assistant classification;
  • Upon completion of the training period and the acquisition of minimum qualifications, the individual may be upgraded to a probationary appointment at step 1 of the Medical Assistant salary range. (An approximate 15% increase in salary).
Part-time extra-help is a provisional classification where permanent status may not be obtained. This position is subject to overtime, standby, shift, and callback assignments and will perform related duties as assigned. This position is non-benefited except for participation in a 401a program with Nationwide.

Typical Tasks

  • Review billing document to make sure all appropriate charges are captured;
  • Perform and record urine dips and prepare urine samples for laboratory; instruct patients in specimen collection; process and handle blood and other specimens; perform and document laboratory equipment quality control;
  • Prepare patient for examination, conduct intake assessments, including reason for visit, pertinent medical histories, medication reconciliation, obtain consents for procedure(s) take vital signs, and other testing, such as vision and hearing and charts data on medical record; ensures any screening tools have been completed;
  • Perform basic unlicensed assistive duties such as administering immunizations and skin tests under the order of licensed providers;
  • Coordinate the referral of patients and the appropriate follow-up of referrals as directed by the nursing and clinician staff for urgent/stat referrals, direct routine referrals to the Centralized Referral Department;
  • Prepare and stock all rooms, check equipment and supplies daily and maintain according to assignment; clean rooms and equipment after each examination and prepare for next patient following appropriate infection control techniques;
  • Perform individual patient education in conjunction with and as directed by the clinician staff;
  • Complete prior authorization for procedures/test requiring insurance authorization;
  • Protec patient confidentiality and follow up HIPAA rules and regulations;
  • Give oral, intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections or immunizations as ordered by clinicians and covered under scope of practice;
  • Greet patients in a courteous manner and explains clinic procedures; may register patients; review chart to identify any follow-up issues, screenings or preventive care needed prior to visit; ensure charts are complete, including all lab, x-ray and special reports, prior to start of clinic;
  • Review the visit notes and identify items for action;
  • Perform electrocardiograms as needed;
  • Document pertinent observations of visits per current charting policy; record entries in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) as appropriate for both face-to-face and phone call encounters; assist provider and licensed nursing staff in the intake assessment of patients and patient telephone calls;
  • Match list of patients with visits and with charge document and submits to billing;
  • Assist Physicians and other providers with procedures; chaperone examinations;
  • Provide interpretation for non-English speaking patients for providers and other staff as needed;
  • Initiate and follow emergency measures including CPR, fire and disaster procedures; and
  • Participate in outreach and follow-up activities as required;
  • Perform opening and closing clinic procedures;
  • Travel to different sites of assignment as required;
  • Perform Department Quality Assurance functions as assigned.
  • Submit prior authorizations for referral;

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience)

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Medical Assistant Trainee:
  • Equivalent to Graduation from High School (Diploma) or GED; AND
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant training program and externship from an accredited vocational school/college; AND
  • Must possess and maintain BLS CPR for Healthcare Providers.
Medical Assistant:
  • Must possess and maintain BLS CPR for Healthcare Providers; AND
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant training program and externship from an accredited vocational school/college; AND
  • Equivalent to Graduation from High School (Diploma) or GED; AND
  • Six (6) months full time experience in a Medical Clinic.

EXAMINATION PROCESS
