This position serves in a regional capacity. Persons serving in this role are required to assume residency in one of the Counties identified under the Conditions of Employment section which includes McLean, Woodford, Tazewell, Dewitt, Piatt, or Logan and will be required to work from their home location as a base of daily operational headquarters to service their designated worksites.
Position Overview
The Department of Agriculture is seeking to hire a Meat and Poultry Inspector Trainee in the McLean County area. Meat and Poultry Inspectors are essential employees on the front lines of protecting our food production system. The successful candidate will start out as a trainee with the potential of being promoted to an inspector. This position will monitor and inspect animals and animal products from slaughter through processing to packaging and labeling. Job Responsibilities
- Successfully completes the Employee Development Guide for basic meat inspection and State of Illinois Department of Agriculture's slaughter and processing training courses to become familiar with provisions of food inspection laws, regulations, manuals and inspection procedures.
- Under close supervision, performs antemortem inspection of live animals and/or poultry prior to slaughter for the presence of conditions indicative of abnormalities or diseases.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
- Receives formal training for a period of 6 - 12 months in the objectives, methods and techniques of meat and poultry inspection.
- Attends and participates in workshops, meetings, institutes, and other activities which will provide meaningful learning experiences for use in meat and poultry inspection.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to high school (preferably with courses in algebra, biology or chemistry).
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers elementary knowledge of disease or abnormal conditions of animals, poultry or carcasses and meat and poultry products.
- Prefers experience maintaining harmonious working relationships.
- Prefers experience operating a computer and the software and database applications utilized by the agency.
- Prefers elementary knowledge of methods and techniques of antemortem and postmortem inspections of meat producing animals and poultry.
- Prefers basic knowledge of computer hardware and software.
- Prefers elementary knowledge of applicable laws, rules and regulations governing the inspection and processing of meat and poultry products.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires ability to successfully pass a pre-employment physical.
- Requires a valid Illinois Driver’s License and ability to travel in performance of duties
- Requires residency in McLean, Woodford, Tazewell, Dewitt, Piatt, or Logan County.
- Requires ability to successfully pass background check.
- Prefers ability to use safety practices around dangerous meat cutting and processing machinery and slippery conditons.
Work Hours: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm/Monday-Friday/daily work hours may vary
