This position will work for the Illinois OSHA Enforcement Division to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health standards and assist with Illinois OSHA’s mission to protect the health and safety of public employees through the inspection, investigation, and evaluation of public facilities. Please understand, IL OSHA enforcement inspections are detailed and require significant documentation. After the on-site inspection, an inspector will spend several hours writing a narrative and developing a case file to support recommended violations. The inspection process typically takes several days to a few weeks and is usually much more intensive than inspections conducted in other occupations.
The Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL) is one of Illinois' most important and dynamic Agencies. With an annual budget of $17 million, and an authorized staff of nearly 100 full-time employees, IDOL has the capacity and capability to provide administration and enforcement of over 25 labor and safety Laws. At IDOL, we take pride in our Agency's mission: to promote and protect the rights, wages, welfare, working conditions, safety, and health of Illinois workers through enforcement of state labor laws, and to safeguard the public through regulation of amusement rides and to ensure compliance with all other labor standards.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of two years of college including courses in engineering, technology, physical or life sciences, industrial hygiene, or related fields. Related work experience in the areas of work safety inspection, consultation, promotion or training may be accepted on a year-for-year basis as meeting the requirements of this class.
Job Responsibilities
- Learns how develop safety training material and present such material to various interest groups
- Learns to conduct interviews of employers and employees to gather relevant information about the safety of the work location.
- Travels to participate in investigations of safety incidents, accidents and fatalities in public workplaces as required under the Federal OSHA grant, including 11(c) whistleblower investigations.
- Receives on-the-job and formal orientation and training to acquaint the employee with the interpretation and application of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), inspection procedures and regulatory enforcement obligations.
- Accepts and completes assignments of increasing difficulty for the purpose of gaining experience and developing work skills
- Attends, participates in staff meetings, conferences, workshops, institutes, and other activities that provide meaningful experiences
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above
Preferred Qualifications (in Order of Significance)
- 1 year of experience preparing clear and concise reports of inspections
- 1 year of experience working with state and federal Occupational Safety and Health Act standards, laws, rules, and regulations
- 1 year of working knowledge of effective methods of inspection and enforcement
Conditions of Employment
- Requires the ability to walk extensively, to climb ladders and to use personal protective equipment such as hard hats, safety shoes, safety glasses and protective clothing.
- Requires possession of a valid driver’s license, automobile liability insurance and the ability to travel to worksites using a state-owned and/or personal vehicle.
- Must pass a pre-employment screening.
- Requires the ability to pass a medical evaluation, wear a negative pressure respirator and walk for extended periods of time while carrying equipment weighing 15 to 30 pounds
