I. PURPOSE/SUMMARY

Lead and direct the materials function in a high volume, team oriented, automotive environment providing long-term planning and support plant objectives for on-time delivery, inventory dollars, DOH, supplier delivery, equipment utilization and use of lean principles and tools.


II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct the activities of shipping, receiving, logistics which supports production operations to ensure appropriate training and development of personnel to meet operational needs.
  • Direct materials function BOS measures to assess trends, take corrective action and meet departmental, plant and corporate goals and objectives.
  • Ensure all purchased material (production and MRO) complies with environmental standards.
  • Responsible to train and develop the organization to understand and implement/manage critical concepts and principles of lean and world class materials management.
  • Ensure 100% on-time delivery from suppliers and to customers.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Interface with operations with respect to schedule control, inventory management, capacity utilization and launch support.
  • Provide overall management strategy and develop robust systems for plant inventory levels including raw, WIP and finished goods to meet inventory goals and support demand requirements.
  • Directly support lean manufacturing principles and processes, as well as NPIS new product introductions.
  • Must live and drive TMS (Tenneco Manufacturing System throughout the plant and all direct reports.
  • Responsible to monitor and manage delivery schedules to minimize freight costs including expedited costs.
  • Participate in daily strategic meetings to ensure continuity and opportunities for improvement are captured and addressed systematically.
  • Contribute to overall corporate and plant strategies by participating in interplant activities and acting as a liaison with corporate materials.
  • Have the authority and responsibility to ensure customer product requirements are communicated through the organization and supplier channels.
  • Obtain environmental records for applicable products, such as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Reduce operational costs through TVM and brainstorming activity. Perform brainstorming on a weekly basis to drive continuous improvement.

III. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages four subordinate supervisors who supervise a total of 20 employees in the Purchasing/Scheduling, Shipping/Receiving, Logistics, and MRO. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.


IV. JOB SPECIFICATIONS


A. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Four year degree, preferably a B. A. or higher

Certification in APICS is highly preferred

Prior automotive experience with Tier I supplier preferred

4-8 years related experience in a lean manufacturing environment, minimum 4 years management experience

Ability to interpret and respond to business trends and customer requirements, technical procedures, logistical systems and government regulations

Must maintain strong training skills and desire to develop systems approaches, good problem solving and action planning skills

Ability to write reports, correspondence and procedural manuals as well as to effectively present data/information to large groups, including customers


B. SKILL/CHARACTERISTICS

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common technical journals and financial reports. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to top management and public groups.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
