WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (Job Overview)


Plan, direct, implement and participate in the development of internal and external communication strategies that support WIC objectives. Responsible for raising visibility of WIC to help the community understand how to access local WIC services including nutrition education and breastfeeding. Provide support, development and leadership guidance to Marketing/Data Coordinator and volunteers.


Perform all duties and responsibilities in compliance with standard operating procedures and other applicable Federal, State and local regulations.


WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE GOOD (Key Responsibilities)


Manage and execute marketing and communications activities.


  • Provide editorial oversight for internal and external messages, ensuring consistent, compelling and coordinated brand messaging across all channels.
  • Serve as WIC’s spokesperson and train and prepare staff and volunteer spokespersons.
  • Contribute to Program’s participant and employee recruitment, retention, and re-engagement goals.
  • Understand overall WIC budget and manage marketing budget.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to produce relevant content for internal and external communications as well as social media platforms.
  • Develop promotional WIC brochures, flyers, posters, banners, as needed.
  • Collaborate with WIC Director and American Red Cross Southern California Region’s Communications Department to produce internal and external communications to ensure National American Red Cross branding guidelines are followed.
  • Measure returns on investment for all marketing projects, in order to make data-driven decisions.
  • Update American Red Cross WIC and Regional San Diego WIC websites as needed.
  • Plan, recommend, and implement overall strategic and operational marketing and communications activities for the San Diego and Imperial County WIC agencies.
  • Utilize surveys and focus groups to measure program satisfaction, customer service, and effectiveness of Program. Work with Marketing/Data Coordinator and Director on survey design, methodology and execution.
  • Support the development of internal and change management communications.
  • Successfully create integrated marketing campaigns through the use and placement of the right messages at the right time through the right channels.


Develop, maintain, and evaluate strategic relationships with community partners to support Program objectives and increase brand awareness and value.


  • Represent American Red Cross WIC in the community.
  • Plan, conduct, and evaluate community outreach activities to recruit new participants and retain current participants.
  • Regularly evaluate activities to determine returns on investment and future outreach activities.
  • Establish and maintain excellent working relationships with community partners who serve the same population and act as referral sources.


Carry out any additional assignments required to fulfill the mission of the American Red Cross and WIC.


  • Coordinate internal education of WIC services to increase awareness of WIC eligibility criteria to effectively refer potential participants.
  • Train in Disaster Response in accordance with skill set.
  • Comply with all fiscal and operational requirements prescribed by the American Red Cross and the State WIC Branch.
  • Work with stakeholders across the organization to manage crises through marketing and communications.
  • Collaborate with and show support of cross-functional goals (including Disaster, Communications, Service to Armed Forces, Biomed, Volunteer Services, Development, and State WIC Branch)


Work Schedule and Location: Normal hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. including some Saturdays and evenings; flexible schedule as approved by supervisor. Virtual or hybrid work location, depending on business need. May be asked to work at various Red Cross WIC locations in San Diego County or virtually. May involve travel.


Pay Information: The salary range for this position is (CA): $ $76,890 - $78,427


Note that American Red Cross salaries are aligned to the specific geographic location in which the work is primarily performed. Other factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role.


WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (Minimum Qualifications)


Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, or Advertising required.


Experience: Minimum 5 years of marketing and communications experience. Previous experience at a non-profit, community-based organization, or government agency preferred. Excellent writing and public speaking skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities. Must have strong project management skills.


Leadership Experience: 3 years of supervisory or management experience, non-profit sector preferred.


Skills and Abilities: Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Ability to create and implement marketing and outreach strategies to achieve organizational goals. Demonstrated analytical and decision-making skills to develop creative processes for continuous improvements. Demonstrated experience managing professional social media platforms for an organization. Ability to manage multiple priorities with strong skills in planning and problem-solving. Analytical and decision-making skills to develop creative processes for continuous program or service improvements. Ability to relate well and effectively with diverse groups and individuals. Strong teamwork and collaboration. Ability to communicate with all levels of an organization comfortably. Ability to work on a team.


Other: Intermediate proficiency with MS Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Experience with website content management (Wordpress), CRM platforms, and SMS Messaging. Graphic design skills or previous experience with Adobe Creative Suite or Canva preferred. Familiarity with federal, state and local employment laws.


  • Combination of candidate’s education and general experience satisfies requirements so long as the total years equate to description’s minimum education and general experience years combined (Management experience cannot be substituted).


Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The work environment will consist of moderate noise (i.e. business office with computers, phones and printers, light traffic). The employee must have the ability to work in a small cubicle and have the ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period of time.
