Job Description
  • Https://sarasotabayexplorers.com/ is looking to add to our team of dedicated naturalists/biologists to help entertain and educate the public.
Responsibilities
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Answering questions by phone or in person about current cruise times, pricing, and availability with accuracy.
  • Narration of a 2 hour Eco-Tour departing from Mote Aquarium discussing the ecosystem, marine mammal population, native and migratory shorebirds, birds of prey and any other wildlife encountered. Deployment and retrieval of an otter trawl net with or without assistance and subsequent identification of fish and invertebrates found within.
  • Written narration is provided while training, addition of relevant and interesting factual information to narrations is encouraged.
  • Communicating with customers clearly regarding trip information.
  • Taking reservations for passengers on all cruises through an online booking application both in person and over the phone.
  • Participation in launching and docking the vessel and all necessary steps, including releasing and securing lines.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required
  • First Aid/CPR Certification (or ability to obtain one).
  • Dedication and enthusiasm towards educating the public about regional flora and fauna, Florida’s natural resources, and local history.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Minimum education of Bachelor’s Degree within the Biological Sciences.
  • Ability to communicate with the public in a courteous and respectful way, and answering questions from the public tactfully.
  • Ability to relay factual information effectively to a variety of audiences in an entertaining and engaging manner.
  • Clear communication skills.
  • Ability to pass a drug test in order to become a member of the Maritime Consortium.
Bonus (not Required But Strongly Desired)
  • Knowledge of Sarasota Bay wildlife and plant life including: shorebirds, dolphins, manatees, and mangrove trees. Knowledge of local Sarasota history.
  • Prior experience on vessels and/or knowledge of common nautical knots.
