Under The Leadership Of The Vice President Of Product Development, The Manager Of Instructional Design Will Be a Leader In Four Key Areas


The Manager, Instructional Design position resides within the Literacy Product Development team, which is responsible for the development of PreK–12 programs in Literacy.


  • Content conceptualization, budgeting, development, and production
  • Actively developing other members of the team
  • Communicating effectively and efficiently between various groups, our team, and stakeholders
  • Helping develop new technology and enhancing existing technology within the available resources and timelines


The candidate should have an excellent understanding of various Instructional Design methodologies and tools and be able to apply creativity and sound instructional principles to solutions. The candidate will be able to work with minimal supervision and excel in managing large volumes of work.


Primary Responsibilities


  • Recommend and provide guidance on new instructional formats and technologies.
  • Work with the Creative Design, User Experience, and Software Development teams to design and implement how content will be presented, organized and accessed within the program.
  • Makes independent decisions to select processes and tools.
  • Work with editorial experts to develop instructional design plans that support program content within digital platforms.
  • Implement and support a growth mindset culture.
  • Advise on and implement process improvements.
  • Budget and track at all appropriate levels from program to component support.
  • Follows current trends and research on innovations and developments in the fast-moving field of instructional design.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to provide and receive input on how to instructionally enhance the content.


Supervisory Responsibilities


A critical aspect of this role is the candidate’s ability to help develop and motivate colleagues, provide additional professional development, and timely and productive feedback. This candidate must be able to hear what others have to say, contribute productively in active meetings, as well as advocate for their teams and projects. The success of this leadership role requires thoughtful and evidenced-based proposals, articulate communication, and a strong growth mindset. This role is also required to help and maintain the tools to maximize efficiency including the status of our programs, budgets and contracts, and fixes for digital issues reported from various sources, among other needs. This role should be able to manage at least three (3) direct reports and will provide leadership for other groups as needed. This role also needs to be ready to cover for any other member of the team or the vice president should the need arise. This role would help manage program budgets of up to $1MM.


Other duties as assigned by management.


As the opportunity arises, this role may be asked to lead company-level initiatives based on their expertise and interests. They may also be asked to represent our team, our department, or other group on similar company initiatives.


Required Knowledge And Experience


  • Ability to budget for multi-million dollar programs and manage a budget of up to $1MM.
  • High degree of flexibility and adaptability.
  • Possesses an eye for detail and is able to manifest ideas into a tangible form.
  • Highly organized and able to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in educational technology, instructional design, communications or related field. Masters degree, preferred.
  • Ability to lead and collaborate actively with others on cross-functional teams.
  • 5+ years of instructional design and development experience, preferably in the field of education.
  • May be required to travel occasionally
  • 3+ years managing 2–5 direct reports effectively as well as multiple vendors.
  • Strong computer skills, specifically Google, Microsoft Office, HTML5 and other digital asset development tools.
  • Excellent communication skills, strong analytical and verbal communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills.


Skills/knowledge/abilities


  • Expertise in documentation and file creation and management
  • Understanding of the software development process
  • Knowledge of instructional design principles
  • Familiarity with various authoring and programming tools.
  • Ability to develop innovative approaches to complex design problems
  • Prior experience with Content Management Systems
