Description
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.
Reporting to the Director of Publications, the Editorial Manager oversees the editorial planning and production of in-gallery texts, labels, digital didactics, media captions, and other materials published by the Academy Museum. We are seeking a candidate who is detail-oriented and efficient, knowledgeable about museum practices, and enjoys working collaboratively in a team environment.
You Will:
  • Manage complex translation projects including the production of bilingual gallery texts and media captions.
  • Support other museum editorial tasks and department needs as assigned.
  • Identify and manage freelance vendors including editors, translators, photographers, and proofreaders.
  • Edit and proofread interpretive materials for exhibitions.
  • Work closely with the Director and Senior Editor to develop and refine the museum’s editorial processes, standards, and documentation methods.
  • Create and maintain editorial calendars, working closely with curators, graphic designers, media producers, and other stakeholders to ensure all deadlines are met.
  • Develop and implement processes that streamline content creation and review.
  • Contribute to style guide management.
  • Track and manage editorial projects across multiple departments and all stages of publishing, from planning through editing, reviews, design, and production.
Position Requirements
You Have:
  • A bachelor’s degree required.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • 5+ years of editing and publishing experience.
  • Familiarity with and interest in museum interpretation issues and best practices.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • A thorough understanding of editing principles, references, and style manuals, especially the Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition).
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects, working independently and managing time effectively.
  • Strong editorial project management, scheduling, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, Google Suite, and Airtable or similar database software.
  • Fluency in Spanish desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to work diplomatically with a range of authors and stakeholders.
Other Requirements:
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 is required, including any booster vaccinations as applicable.
Our Benefits:
  • PTO and Sick Time
  • 401(k)
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision
The expected base salary range for this role is $70,000 to $75,000. The actual base pay offered will be determined by factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
