Job Description

Job Purpose/Summary: Responsible for the management of various fleet, equipment and maintenance projects, as assigned by the director. Also responsible for the effective achievement of performance, cost management, and schedule goals established for assigned projects, working with various segments of Young Brothers ports, vendors, and customers. This involves analyzing problems (including fairly complex problems), making decisions, and communicating. A relatively high degree of skill in each of these areas is required for success.


Essential Functions:


  • Manage all areas of Fleet and Maintenance to include Maintenance Shop, Hilift, Reefer, Container and Chassis.
  • Manages repair and maintenance schedule and requirements at Neighbor Island ports that are completed by sub-contractors
  • Administer PM program to maximize equipment availability while managing cost.
  • Identify, develop and implement administrative functions, procedures and controls.
  • Defines project objectives, including performance, cost and schedule objectives.

Obtains concurrence of management, customer, vendors, etc., on objectives.

Measures results against the plan (cost, schedule, and performance) and communicates results to others.

  • Plans and administers budgets for company shore side assets, maintenance and/or improvement projects; compile and maintain records of labor and material cost for such projects.
  • Develop, compile, submit and administer the annual budget for department, in partnership with the Director.
  • Purchase and/or approves parts and supplies and processes documents during repairs.
  • Manage capital projects to identify, document and provide port equipment requirements, in partnership with the Director of Operations.
  • Reviews reports of expenditures for previous fiscal year and proposed improvements to equipment in order to prepare budget estimates for upcoming fiscal year.
  • Support transition of equipment to cleaner and more efficient technologies.
  • Responsible for audit outcomes and corrections.
  • Manage maintenance office support functions, including timekeeping, claims support, PR/PO requests, internal audit, and storeroom.
  • Oversee and manage registration and compliance for fleet equipment across all ports, including but not limited to chassis and auto registration, insurance requirements, safety inspections and reconciliations.
  • Identify, document and implement areas of improvement within fleet and maintenance, including organizational impacts. Interface with internal and external stakeholders, document process and create company standard.
  • Track and manage cargo handling equipment through SAP and FACE (Freight and Container Equipment).
  • Maintain records of equipment - inventory, operations transactions and reconciliation.
  • Coordinate charitable giving as assigned Saltchuk affiliates.

Supervisory and Leadership of Direct Staff

  • Effectively communicates regional goals and objectives.
  • Processes employee evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to all company policies.
  • Conduct investigations by gathering facts and interviewing witnesses.

  • Supervise union-represented employees and responsible for all matters of employment including recruiting, training, development, promotion, discipline and termination to ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements and company policies.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload, meet deadlines, and work with frequent interruptions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as human relations necessary in dealing with employees, shipyard, vendors, and customers.
  • Communicates and collaborates with all departments and maintenance shop employees regarding equipment related topics and issues on all Ports
  • Ability to plan and organize work in an often-changing environment.
  • Ability to be creative in problem solving.
  • Ability to remain calm and maintain a sense of humor during times of stress.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive coherent written reports.
  • Ability to use a personal computer for word-processing, spreadsheets, and schedules.
  • Ability to give attention to detail, to make decisions, and to utilize creative thinking to solve problems (sometimes involving complex or management issues).
  • Familiarity with cargo/logistics terminology helpful.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to problem-solve.
  • Understands statistical concepts to understand and recognizes trends.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 2 – 4 years’ experience in administrative role; marine, terminal operations, heavy equipment maintenance, logistics or construction industry preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 3 – 5 years’ supervisory experience of union-represented employees.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office and shipyard environment, with minimal travel. Physical demands require the ability to sit at a desk for extended periods of time, working at PC. Regular and predictable attendance is a requirement.


Physical/Mental Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The work day usually has a high number of interruptions and priority changes necessitating the need to remain flexible and focused in order to accomplish tasks.
