GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Receives, sorts and delivers state mail and packages and/or may direct the operation of the mailroom activities of a large state department; operates postage meter; keeps records of postage charges, performs related work as required.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains log for all overnight letters/packages for mail and packages
- Provides reconciliation for all mail, etc.
- Performs other related duties as assigned
- Seals and ties mail when necessary for mail
- May exercise working supervision over a small number of employees engaged in mailing room activities in a large state department for mail and packages
- Cleans scales, mailing room and postage meter
- Ensures the secured delivery of student mail and packages
- Performs all accounting transactions associated with an automated postage machine and performs manual accounting for Postage Due, Business Reply, etc.
- Delivers mail and packages to offices and departments and collects outgoing mail
- Takes mail to Federal Post Office as needed
- Works with, or in absence of, storekeeper by reviewing purchase orders and other records to determine resources required to meet shipping and receiving needs, availability of goods, and to ensure accuracy and completeness of receipts
- Receives, scans and delivers mail and packages utilizing electronic receiving systems
- Receives, sorts and distributes incoming mail and packages
- May serve as backup for other mail room personnel as needed and/or assigned
- Operates and maintains an automated postage machine with meter
- Examines incoming goods to verify quality, quantity and condition of goods for conformance to specifications, including counting, weighing and/or sorting the incoming articles.
- Weighs outgoing mail and packages and sorts according to class for postage for all mail and packages
- Performs physical inventory of University Equipment to determine actual amounts on hand and to review and/or reconcile to location and custodian record.

- Ability to operate mail-handling and processing equipment such as postage meters, scales and addressing machines
- Ability to lead a group of workers

- Ability to understand and apply the laws, rules, policies and procedures governing assigned unit activities
- Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished; the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and/or evaluations; determining subordinates’ training needs and providing or arranging for such training; motivating subordinates to work effectively; determining the need for disciplinary action and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects
- Knowledge of the types and uses of mail-processing and handling equipment
- Ability to give oral and written instructions in a precise and understandable manner
- Ability to assemble items of information in accordance with established procedures
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle

- Knowledge of the types and uses of agency forms
- Knowledge of the laws, rules, policies and procedures governing assigned unit activities
- Knowledge of Federal laws, rules and regulations governing postal services
- Knowledge of agency procedures and guidelines governing the purchase of supplies, materials, and equipment
- Knowledge of the types and uses of mail processing and handling equipment
- Knowledge of standard maintenance procedures followed in connection with the operation of mail-processing and handling equipment
- Knowledge of the types and classes of mail
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience in office work or in work in which the processing of incoming and/or outgoing mail (i.e. delivering, sorting, weighing, metering, etc.) was a major duty.
LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Must complete training for forklift and hand truck operation per OSHA or other state requirements.
