Job Description

LIGHTING TECHNICIAN

The Dallas Symphony seeks an experienced Lighting Technician to provide technical production

support with emphasis on performance lighting installation/operation, as well as maintenance

for performance lighting equipment and architectural fixtures for arts and cultural events at the

Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center.

Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Providing ongoing routine preventive maintenance, inspections, cleaning, and basic
repairs of performance lighting equipment, including: moving lights, follow spots,
architectural fixtures, hardware, conventional fixtures, lamp replacements, and repairs
to sockets and associated cables;
  • Providing electrical testing, as well as procurement/coordination of parts replacement,
tools, consumables and repairs as applicable;
  • Assisting with maintenance and repairs of acoustic canopies, reverb doors, acoustical
curtains, stage electrical equipment, rigging equipment, audio, and video equipment;
  • Providing lighting production support for concerts and special events, including: master
electrician duties, lighting design, control console programming, lighting system
installation, operation, and system troubleshooting;
  • Operating movable acoustic canopies, reverb doors, acoustical curtains, and rigging;
  • Setting up and operating stage electrical equipment, special effects, audio, video,
staging;
  • Providing other necessary technical support as assigned;
  • Providing excellent customer service for performing artists, vendors, rental clients, and
general public, while maintaining and communicating venue policies, safety guidelines
and processes as published;
  • Assisting with maintaining accurate written performance lighting equipment inventory,
as well as preserving ongoing revisions to the lighting plot and system infrastructure
diagrams to ensure safe, efficient and reliable system functionality;
  • Providing accurate written event reports to track stage labor, equipment inventory,
billing and administrative statistics; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

The Lighting Technician will frequently work with the following equipment and programs:

Microsoft Office, Vectorworks, Hog 418, ETC & GrandMA lighting consoles, ETCNet2, DMX

protocols, Colortran, ETC and Lutron dimmers, ETC High End Systems, VL, and various LED and

moving head fixtures.


The successful candidate will possess:

  • Three years of experience in installation, diagnosis, repair and operation of stage

lighting and related electrical or electronic equipment and AV systems;

  • Experience with rigging, stage theater practices, various production equipment

applications, and venue facility maintenance;

  • An understanding of typical requirements for a hall acoustically designed for live

symphonic music;

  • The ability to work at heights up to 80 feet;
  • The ability to lift 50 pounds above shoulders;
  • The ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented

environment; and

  • The ability to work various hours, including holidays, weekends and evenings.
