The Lynchburg Public Library is seeking a qualified librarian to provide professional, children’s library services in the Youth Services department, as well as focusing on outreach and community engagement. The successful candidate will be able to relate to youth and their caregivers in an urban library setting and bring a sense of humor to their work. This position requires you to work evenings and weekends.

Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
When assigned to Youth Services - Children:

  • Ability to relate to young people and their caregivers in an urban library setting.
  • Works closely with the Youth Services Department Head in the development, implementation, and evaluation of youth and teen programs, including early literacy storytimes, after-school programs such as S.T.E.A.M., outreach to area schools and agencies, summer reading programs, special holiday programs, and grant writing.
  • Prepares and presents early literacy and educational programs for children, teens, families, and educators. Projects may include duties such as overseeing the Teen Advisory Board (TAB).
  • Devises and implements marketing strategies to promote Youth programs and activities as well as library resources within the community; can include making flyers, writing press releases, and creating online promotional material.
  • Contributes to a collection development team; considers reader interest, monitors journals and reviews, selects print, non-print, and electronic materials making best use of allocated funds, weeds collection as assigned, evaluates gift books and patron requests for materials.
  • Upholds excellent customer service standards with enthusiasm, energy, and professionalism.
  • Assists patrons of all ages in the use of the library and its resources; provides reader's advisory assistance to children and their caregivers; maintains an appropriate atmosphere and discipline depending upon the area and the customers being served.
  • Serves as the Youth Services outreach and community engagement coordinator.
  • Serves as key member of the library technology committee; responsible for maintaining the library's webpage, social media pages, and other developing tools for the Youth Services department.
  • Keeps current with technology, social media, and trends in the library profession.
  • Attends professional workshops, webinars, and other continuing education activities.
  • Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of children's and young adult literature.
Additional Duties:
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends
  • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.
  • Collaborates with other library staff members as requested on special projects.
  • Performs additional duties as required or assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • May supervise Library Assistants or volunteers.

Minimum Education and Experience Required

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master's degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution required. Experience working as a children’s and/or teen librarian in a public library setting for at least 2-4 years preferred. General knowledge of the principles and methods of modern library services for youth, including storytimes, summer reading programs, STEM/STEAM programming, and outreach.

Additional Requirements

Depending on assignment, possession of valid driver's license issued by Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record according to City's driving criteria may be required.

Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
