Job Summary

Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Youth and Family Engagement in collaboration with the North-East Branch Manager, this position engages children in fun learning activities, promotes library services to children, teachers, families, and other caring adults in the North-East Branch serving area. Creates and conducts programming for children, provides outreach services to youth in the community, and partners with youth-serving organizations.

What You’d Do

  • Participate in the planning and implementation of system-wide programming for youth
  • Work with the Teen Services Associate to provide services to all youth in the North-East service area as well as with other Youth and Family Engagement (YFE) staff to ensure quality service for youth, families and other caring adults.
  • Other responsibilities include ensuring the administration of Kids Café and supervising summer youth interns, temporary employees, and volunteers.
  • Provide and promote story times and other programming and services to meet the needs of children and the important adults in their lives
  • Initiate and maintain contact with schools, child-care providers, and community organizations.
  • Help ensure the operation of the branch in the absence of other branch leaders.
Requirements:

You Need

  • Ability to speak and understand English is required. Additional consideration may be given to individuals that are fluent in any non-English languages spoken in the Kansas City area including Somali, Swahili, Spanish, Arabic, French, Dari, Pashto, and Vietnamese.
  • A knowledge of children’s literature and online resources and an understanding of youth developmental stages.
  • An ability to create a welcoming environment for youth and their families in the branch and to provide engaging and effective library services.
  • An ability to plan and present story times for children and to create programming for youth through age 12.
  • Candidates that have experience and dedication to serving communities of color and connecting youth to learning opportunities are of particular interest. Minimum requirements include a desire to work with youth, additional consideration given to those who hold a master’s degree in library science, human services, or related fields.
  • An ability to work independently and as part of a team and handle multiple projects simultaneously. A capacity for responding to changing circumstances and expectations is also important.
  • The ability to assess the needs of the community, reach out to organizations in the service area that serve youth, and create partnering opportunities.
  • Outstanding customer service and engagement skills with strong understanding of trauma-informed service.
  • The desire and ability to work with diverse populations (i.e. age, gender, class, sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc.) with a desire to help close the learning opportunity gaps that disproportionately affect youth of color and those living in poverty.

Other Things You Should Know

This is a full-time exempt position. The starting salary is $49,137 including excellent benefits. It is primarily a Monday – Friday 8:30 – 5:00 job with one evening a week and one Saturday a month as part of the set schedule. Helping with system-wide events will occasionally require additional evening or weekend hours.
