About the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office
Our Juvenile Division is a national model in innovative, effective responses to youthful offending that seeks to hold children responsible for their behavior, while affording them the chance to turn their lives around and be positive contributors to our community. In addition to prosecuting criminal cases through the traditional court system, our Juvenile Division has implemented groundbreaking Restorative Justice Initiatives such as the CHOOSE 180 Program, Family Intervention and Restorative Services (FIRS), Restorative Community Pathways (RCP) and Truancy Drop-Out Prevention, where we seek to improve community safety and better address the interests of victims of crime.
The mission of the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office is to do Justice. The hallmarks of service in the Office are Integrity, Compassion, Leadership and Professionalism. King County provides more than 2 million residents with excellence and equity in the essential services that make this one of the nations' best places to live, work, play and raise a family.
We value diversity in our team and embrace the cultural and demographic qualities of the King County community. We work to attract and retain a team that represents the range of backgrounds and perspectives that arise from differences of culture and circumstances. We value the ideas and brilliance that come from lived experience. Candidates with such experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
An internship in the Juvenile Division is an excellent opportunity for exposure to criminal law practice. The intern works closely with the Prosecutor's Office staff and law enforcement, and is in regular contact with judges, the defense bar, and the general public. The Juvenile Division handles all levels of crime committed by children under 18 years of age throughout King County, including serious violent felonies. The position is demanding, but provides in-court practice, educational experience, attention and rewards rarely duplicated by other internship programs.
A Rule 9 intern assigned to the Juvenile Division would be responsible for a variety of duties, including:
- Performing administrative tasks such as maintaining electronic case files and preparing legal correspondence.
- Attending court hearings and other proceedings, such as detention review hearings, plea and disposition hearings, and review hearings
- Interacting with other attorneys, court personnel, and members of the public in a professional and respectful manner.
- Assisting in case preparation, including case investigation, reviewing evidence and discovery, and witness interviews.
- Conducting legal research and drafting legal documents, such as motions, pleadings and legal briefs.
- Participating in trial preparation and potentially assisting with the presentation of bench trials, including making opening statements, examining witnesses and making closing arguments.
Juvenile Division interns work closely with experienced deputy prosecutors and legal service professionals who specialize in juvenile justice. Ability to collaborate and thrive in a team setting are critical for any successful candidate for this position.
- Eligible for a Washington State Rule 9 License (Download PDF reader). This typically requires completion of second year in a three-year program. Part-time students and those in four-year programs are encouraged to check with their school and the WSBA before applying.
