Job Description

Legal Analyst performs technical legal casework in support of criminal law attorneys; prepares cases and gathers data needed for various hearings; drafts legal documents, such as motions, summons, subpoenas, and responses to discovery requests; drafts pleadings and discoveries and performs data entry using a case management system. This position collaborates with law enforcement agencies to ensure that all necessary materials, such as office video footage, audio recordings, and witness statements are obtained and reviewed prior to the court date. This position is also in charge of contacting individuals associated with the case in order to gather more information, data, and/or documents to aid the attorneys in the prosecution of their cases. Handles a high volume of criminal cases collaboratively with a team. Responds to the general public and law enforcement inquiries about the criminal process. Performs work with significant autonomy within established office procedures and guidelines.

Essential Functions: Creates new criminal case files based on accurate information gathered from multiple sources and inputs data into the case management software. Processes incoming criminal legal documents, forms, and records. Requests additional reports, witness statements, and follow-up investigations as necessary. Routinely handles information of a sensitive or confidential nature. (10%)


Analyzes police reports, citations, and documents for accuracy and enters the information into the case file system. Evaluates and ensure all newly received documents conform to established policies and regulations. (10%)


Drafts or prepares a variety of legal documents (e.g., motions, summons, subpoenas, responses to discovery requests, etc.) to support prosecutors, defense attorneys, law enforcement agencies, expert witnesses, and civilians; and handles pleadings for attorney review and signature. Files documents electronically with the appropriate authority, agency, or court.


Organizes court documents electronically for assigned attorneys prior to appearing in court. Researches and obtains police officers' audio recordings, 911 and video recordings, media files, and records from victims and witnesses. Contacts witnesses, police officers, and victims to respond to questions about subpoenas and other legal documents and to ensure witness statements obtained are reviewed before the court date. Checks defendants' prior criminal records, license, and registration status from the statewide court.


Constructs discovery packets and responds to discovery deadlines. Redacts protected personal contact, and private and identifying information from police reports on criminal cases in compliance with Idaho statutes and prepares these files to be shared with defense attorneys. Converts documents, transfers all electronic case correspondence and discovery materials through the web to outside counsel, and tracks and monitors retrieval.


Prepares, manages, prioritizes, and tracks a significant volume of criminal cases from the filing process through the criminal adjudication process. Processes, checks, and assigns tasks electronically to staff and handling attorneys using the criminal case management system and manages and organizes the electronic files.


Monitors and tracks the status of defendants’ probation for compliance and generates warrants of arrest for failure to comply. Tracks the closing of court files to ensure accurate court disposition, restitution, and property disposal are entered for various agencies to retrieve. Obtains out-of-state judgment and conviction records to aid prosecution for repeated offenses.


Utilizes legal resources and databases to conduct legal and factual research, identify essential witnesses and evidence and prepare files. Reviews files, documents, and other information that may require correspondence with internal and external parties in order to determine the appropriate course of action in complex situations. Provides technical assistance to attorneys, staff, defense attorneys, police agencies, expert witnesses, and the general public. Consults with other agencies and departments for proper document routing, requesting and handling certified judgments, retrieval of criminal correspondence, and questions necessary to aid in prosecution.


Organizes attorney court schedules in order to ensure proper coverage of caseloads; anticipate schedule conflicts by reviewing attorneys' schedules, checking calendars, and making recommendations for changes as appropriate. Assists incoming visitors and phone callers by responding to criminal and civil inquiries and needs. Responds to information requests and provide legal information about court processes, court rules, court records, and forms. Attends to phone calls and e-mails, manages settlement conferences via web conferencing tools, and sends out letters and documents.

Requirements:

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

Associate’s degree in Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field and two years of progressively responsible experience in public administration, a professional law office, or public safety agency performing advanced administrative support duties, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.


Knowledge of: standard office practices, methods, and equipment; computer usage including related software; the criminal justice system, legal terms, processes, and practices.


Ability to: type a minimum of 60 wpm; interpret legal documents, governing regulations, policies and procedures under the supervision of an attorney; prepare detailed reports and analyze for conformity; research, analyze and interpret statistical data to draw conclusions, correct problems and recommend solutions; maintain a high level of confidentiality; remain calm in stressful situations; deal courteously, professionally and firmly with individuals who may be emotional in order to convey critical information; use interpersonal skills with co-workers, other agencies (local and national courts and police agencies) and the general public; consolidate information from various sources into a prescribed format; manage high-volume caseload responsibilities with continuous interruptions and occasionally conflicting priorities; work independently and in a team environment; use appropriate discretion and judgment, occasionally with minimal direct supervision; manage time effectively, multi-task, and organize and prioritize tasks with detailed accuracy; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor, and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.
