SIA is the safest automotive manufacturing plant in the United States and is also a pillar in the community due to its numerous fundraising activities held onsite, donations to local charities and plentiful volunteer opportunities. SIA is a frontrunner in environmental conservation being the first Zero-Landfill automotive manufacturing plant and the first to have its campus designated a backyard wildlife habitat. SIA has grown tremendously since its 1989 beginnings and continues to be an example of success within the automotive industry.

Position Overview: SIA is seeking a professional, skilled individual for a Japanese-English Interpreter & Translator Direct Hire position. This position is responsible for helping our native English and Japanese-speaking Associates communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. A successful Interpreter/Translator at SIA will be highly focused and well versed in consecutive/simultaneous interpretation. You may be asked to support members of the executive and/or senior leadership team during international meetings by simultaneously interpreting spoken Japanese to English and vice versa.

Outline of duties:

  • Collaborates with Associates and management to provide explanation or advice on cultural differences or norms to improve effective communications within our intercultural workplace.
  • Responsible for providing simultaneous/consecutive interpretation for internal, external, and virtual meetings, conferences, teleconferences, ceremonies/events, business trips, visitation to and by customers, vendors, suppliers, governmental authorities, industry associations, parent company and company affiliates.
  • Responsible for providing correct, clear, and concise written translation of any documents in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and PDFs, inclusive of e-mail communications.
  • Responsible to render correct concepts and meanings between Japanese and English, upholding correct rules of grammar, clarity, and tone.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to read and write using the Japanese Writing System (Kana and Kanji)
  • Ability to remain discrete with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to concentrate, stay detached from the conversation and always remain neutral and objective while providing consecutive/simultaneous interpretation.
  • High level of professionalism
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook)
  • Team player
  • Exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Dependability and Flexibility
  • Bachelor’s degree in Language or related field
  • Fluency in Business-level English and Japanese (native speaker of either English or Japanese language preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of Keigo (formal Japanese)
  • Independent self-starter able to prioritize work under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Strong understanding of cultural norms & customs of the U.S. and Japan

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Japanese simultaneous interpreting experience (both in person and video conferencing)
  • Basic knowledge in Computer-Aided Translation (CAT)
  • Preferred knowledge of automotive manufacturing industry-specific terminology
